This invention relates to a method for emulsion templating hollow silica-based particles. The particles are suitable for containing one or more active ingredients or for containing other smaller particles which may include one or more active ingredients. The emulsion templated particles can be formed from two or more silanes. The emulsion templated particles can also be formed from a silane and a compound that attaches a polymer on the shell of the hollow silica-based particles.

This invention relates to a method for forming hollow silica-based particles suitable for containing one or more active ingredients or for containing other smaller particles which may include one or more active ingredients. The method comprises preparing an emulsion including a continuous phase that is polar or non-polar and a dispersed phase comprising droplets including (i) a polar active ingredient when the continuous phase is non-polar or (ii) a non-polar active ingredient when the continuous phase is polar; and adding a silica precursor to the emulsion such that the silica precursor can be emulsion templated on the droplets to form hollow silica-based particles. The silica precursor has the general formula (I): R&#x2014;Si&#x2014;(OR), wherein Ris selected from substituted and unsubstituted alkyl, substituted and unsubstituted aryl, alcohols, amines, amides, aldehydes, acids, esters, and functional groups having an unsaturated carbon-carbon bond, Ris an alkyl group, x+y=4, and y=1, 2 or 3. The &#x2014;ORgroup is a hydrolyzable organic group that exhibits an ability to form a silicon-oxygen bond chain as a result of hydrolysis and condensation.

This invention relates to a method for forming hollow silica-based particles suitable for containing one or more active ingredients or for containing other smaller particles which may include one or more active ingredients. In the method, an emulsion is prepared including a continuous phase that is polar or non-polar, and a dispersed phase comprising droplets including (i) a polar active ingredient when the continuous phase is non-polar or (ii) a non-polar active ingredient when the continuous phase is polar; and a prehydrolyzed silica precursor is added to the emulsion such that the silica precursor can be emulsion templated on the droplets to form hollow silica-based particles.

The invention encompasses bodywashes containing an additive. The additive may contain a sunscreen. The additive may contain 2, 3, or more than three sunscreens. Optionally, one or more of the sunscreens may be encapsulated. The invention further encompasses methods of making and using bodywashes containing an additive, e.g., an additive containing a sunscreen.

Bodywashes containing additives

The invention encompasses additives for addition to a bodywash, where the additives contain one or more sunscreens, and where a bodywash which contains the additive imparts to the skin an SPF of at least about 2, in some cases at least about 5, or 10, or 15. Also described are methods of making and using the additives.

Sunscreen compositions and methods of use

The invention encompasses additives for addition to a composition for topical application, e.g., a bodywash, where the additive contains an encapsulated non-sunscreen, and methods of making and using the additives as well as topical compositions containing the additives. The additive may be encapsulated in a sol-gel microcapsule, and, in some cases, also includes a cationic polymer.

Bodywash additives

The invention encompasses methods of use of bodywashes containing additive to modify skin, e.g., protection of skin from sunlight by application of a bodywash containing a sunscreen. Thus, in one aspect, the invention provides a method for protection of skin from sunlight by applying a bodywash comprising a sunscreen to the skin, where after application of the bodywash to skin and rinsing, the skin is protected from sunlight with an average SPF of at least about 15.
