A method of generating electrical and magnetic fields in salt water marine environments using an elongated dimensionally stable flexible electrode (30) having a current carrying inner portion (31) in an outer protective and electrically conductive sheath (33) formed of ruthenium dioxide or iridium oxide. A layer of titanium cladding (33) may be provided on the inner current carrying portion (31) for carrying the outer sheath (33). The anode electrode is utilized for generating electrical current, such as for use in developing magnetic fields in salt water marine environments, preferably as an element of a sweep cable device having a floatation means around which one or more electrodes are helically wound.

Method of generating electrical and magnetic fields in salt water marine

A sealed, rechargeable nickel-zinc cell includes a zinc electrode active mass essentially free of zinc metal when at full discharge, a carboxylated styrene-butadiene binder retaining the zinc electrode mixture in a coherent structure, a predetermined amount of cadmium being included in the zinc electrode mixture, a separator preferably comprising at least two layers of material free of any adhesive binding the layers together and a wicking layer positioned between the nickel positive electrode and the separator.

An electrochemical system including a chlorine positive electrode, such as zinc-chlorine cell, is disclosed which complexes chlorine by utilizing (1) a selected organic compound, such as, for example, n-butyl carbamate, which includes a --NH.sub.n R.sub.2-n functionality wherein R is an appropriate organic moiety, and n is an integer, either 1 or 2, and an electron-withdrawing substituent alpha to the nitrogen and (2) a buffer to provide a liquid oil, which yields chlorine when required in discharge of the cell.

The disclosure depicts a novel gas switch comprising a membrane having at least one passageway separating a first gas containing region from a second gas containing region. The gas switch also comprises a liquid having a low vapor pressure contained at least within the passageway of the membrane. The liquid is contained in the passageway when a pressure difference between the first and second regions is less than a first predetermined value, thereby preventing a gas exchange between the first and second regions. When the pressure difference across the membrane exceeds a second predetermined value the liquid substantially flows out of the passageway, thereby opening the passageway for a gas exchange between the first and second regions; and when the pressure difference across the membrane is reestablished at a value less than the first predetermined value, the fluid flows back into the passageway thereby closing the passageway and ending the gas exchange between the first and second region. In some embodiments the first predetermined value of pressure may be substantially identical to the second predetermined value of pressure.

Metal/oxygen cells such as zinc/oxygen cells using air as the source of oxygen are provided with a cathode comprising a unitary member which, in a preferred embodiment, satisfies all of the diverse requirements for a cathode in this type of cell, the unitary member consisting of a hydrophobic portion and a hydrophilic portion comprising an ion exchange material which carries the desired amounts of an oxygen reduction catalyst. In a preferred embodiment, the oxygen reduction catalyst likewise serves as the current collector.
