An apparatus for properly aligning a cathode-ray tube projection unit before a viewing screen includes a pair of ultrasonic rangefinders and a cooperating pair of light emitting diode (LED) reader units. One ultrasonic rangefinder and one reader unit are connected to each of two opposite sides of the projection unit. Each rangefinder is directed toward the viewing screen to sense the distance between the viewing screen and the side of the projection unit to which the rangefinder is connected. The cooperating LED reader unit then indicates whether that side is too close to, too far away from or a proper operating distance from the viewing screen. A method for properly positioning the projection unit includes the steps of: (1) sensing the respective distances between opposite sides of the projection unit and the viewing screen; (2) indicating whether the opposite sides are too close to, too far away or a proper operating distance from the viewing screen; and (3) adjusting the positioning of the unit as indicated.

Dual reflected energy beam alignment system

A process for making an envelope for a projection televised tube, that includes a spherically curved electronic beam target surface spaced away from the neck of the tube, a larger reflective surface spherically curved concentrically with the target surface on an end plate located close to the tube neck, a target support that preferably constitutes a face plate for the envelope, and a hollow cylindrical spacer member for closing the side of the tube envelope and for holding the target support accurately spaced from the reflective surface, includes making the ends of the cylindrical member and the abutting peripheral surfaces of the end plate and target concentric with the target and reflective surfaces, so that slight relative lateral motion of the parts during assembly and bonding will not affect tube projection optics, while the relationship between the target and reflective surfaces is precisely maintained in spaced concentric relationship.

Process for making envelope for projection television tube

A portable video image projection system is disclosed. The system is of the type which processes a video signal representative of a video image so as to provide a processed video signal, and includes at least one optical projection device responsive to the processed video signal for forming and projecting an image-forming beam of light along an optical axis so as to provide the video image on a substantially vertical viewing surface at a focal plane spaced a predetermined distance from the system along the axis. The system further comprises (1) a cabinet for supporting the projection device so as to project initially the image-forming beam in a substantially upward direction through an upper, open portion of the cabinet, and (2) a top including a specularly light reflective surface disposed to face the projection device. The top is dimensioned and movable between a first position wherein the top serves as a closure for the upper portion of said cabinet, and a second position wherein the light reflective surface is disposed to fold the optical axis so as to reflect the beam in a substantially horizontal direction. In accordance with another aspect of the invention an improved portable video image projection system is provided by a video image projection system of the type which projects a focussed image onto a light reflective surface for viewing the image, wherein the system further comprises a positioning device, supported by the system, for setting the position of the projection means relative to the light reflective surface so that the focussed image is congruent with the surface. The positioning device provides a first pair of directional light beams intersecting at a first intersection point at a fixed distance from the system and in the focal plane of the focussed image, and a second pair of directional light beams intersecting at a second point at the fixed distance and in the focal plane.

The ends of the cylindrical member and the abutting surfaces of the end plate and target support are all configured to provide joint interfaces between the elements that lie in spherical planes that are concentric with the target and reflective surfaces, so that slight lateral motion of the parts during assembly and handling will not affect tube projection optics, while the spacing between the target and reflective surfaces is precisely maintained in concentric relationship.

Projection televison tube and process for forming same

A color projection television receiver and projector having three color tubes mounted in fixed relation and in predetermined location relative to a screen for projecting three color pictures in registration thereon. Accurate registration of the pictures results from a projection tube structure adapted for accurate reproducability in production, whereby field adjustment is minimized. The tube structure employs a mounting barrel accurately suspended within the evacuated envelope and supporting a phosphor-coated target and a projection mirror. A Schmidt correction lens is mounted externally to the envelope of each tube.

Projection television tube system and method of producing same

A color projection television receiver and projector having three color tubes mounted in fixed relation and in predetermined location relative to a screen for projecting three color pictures in registration thereon. Accurate registration of the pictures results from a projection tube structure adapted for accurate reproducability in production, whereby field adjustment is minimized. The tube structure employs a mounting barrel accurately suspended within the evacuated envelope and supporting a phosphorcoated target and a projection mirror. A Schmidt correction lens is mounted externally to the envelope of each tube.
