A multi-pass heat exchanger having a return manifold with a partition, a front wall, and a rear wall is provided. The partition separates the return manifold into a collection chamber and a distribution chamber. The front and rear walls define a fluid channel. The front wall has a plurality of perforations placing the fluid channel in separate fluid communication with the collection chamber and the distribution chamber.

Multi-pass heat exchangers having return manifolds with distributing inserts

A manifold for a heat exchanger includes a header radially surrounding and in spaced relationship to an axially extending distributor conduit. The distributor conduit is formed by bending the sheet along the leading edge, and the header is formed by bending a remainder of the sheet including a trailing edge about an axis in radially spaced relationship to the distributor conduit. The cross sections are completed and closed by placing the leading and trailing edges into contact with, and sealing the edges to the sheet.

Method of manufacturing a manifold for a heat exchanger

A heat exchanger assembly includes an outlet header extending along an outlet axis to define an outlet cavity and an inlet header defining an inlet cavity. A plurality of refrigerant tubes extends from the inlet header through the outlet header and into the outlet cavity. A collector conduit having a generally semi-circular conduit cross-section defining an arced surface and a chord surface interconnected with rounded ends is disposed in the outlet header and includes a conduit body portion and at least one conduit end portion interconnected by a conduit transition portion with the conduit body portion being offset from the conduit end portion. The conduit body portion is engaged to an interior surface of the outlet header to space the conduit body portion from the refrigerant tubes and the conduit end portion is coaxial with the outlet header axis to provide a central outlet for the refrigerant vapor.

Non-cylindrical refrigerant conduit and method of making same

A heat exchanger assembly includes a first single-piece manifold and a second single-piece manifold spaced from and parallel to the first single-piece manifold. Each of the first and second single-piece manifolds has a tubular wall defining a flow path. A plurality of flow tubes extend in parallel between the first and second single-piece manifolds and are in fluid communication with the flow paths. An insert having a distribution surface is slidably disposed in the flow path of the first single-piece manifold to establish a distribution chamber within the first single-piece manifold. A series of orifices defined in the distribution surface of the insert are in fluid communication with the flow path and the distribution chamber for uniformly distributing a heat exchange fluid between the flow path and the flow tubes.

Heat exchanger assembly

A core unit for a heat exchanger comprises a pair of headers spaced from one another each defining a fluid space for receiving a fluid therein and each defining a plurality of apertures. A first region comprising a plurality of first tubes extends between the headers and a first fin is disposed between adjacent pairs of the first tubes. A second region comprising a plurality of second tubes extends between the headers and a second fin is disposed between adjacent pairs of the second tubes. A crushable center different than the first and second regions is disposed parallelly between the first and second regions for controllably crushing when the headers are bent.

Bendable core unit

A heat exchanger assembly includes a first and second manifold. Each of the manifolds includes a tubular wall and a pair of manifold ends spaced from each other defining a flow path. A plurality of flow tubes extend between the manifolds and are in fluid communication with the flow paths. An insert is slidably disposed in the flow path of the first manifold. The insert divides the flow path into a plurality of chambers. The chambers and the flow tubes cooperate to establish a plurality of flow passes. The flow passes are for directing a heat exchange fluid through the heat exchanger assembly. The chambers are useful for orienting and connecting plumbing connections at various locations along the manifolds.

An improved method for producing a basic B tube configuration for a folded heat exchanger tube ( ). A braze clad metal strip ( ) having inner ( ) and outer ( ) surfaces and a opposed edges (12) is progressively formed over and in by a series of progressive roller stations ( A, A- J, J) until the lower edges ( ) on a pair of central abutting flanges centrally engage the strip inner surface ( ). Between two of the roller stations (G and H), a powered dispense valve ( ) with nozzle ( ) continuously dispenses a bead ( ) of material containing flux or, alternatively, flux and braze material. Bead ( ), rather than being a thin stripe, is a thick semi cylindrical shape, with substantial viscosity. As the flanges ( ) move into abutment and the downstream roller stations, the flange edges ( ) are forced down into the bead ( ), some of which is pumped up between the outer surfaces ( ) of the abutted flanges ( ), yielding a good, solid braze joint between the two.

Method of forming heat exchanger tube

An automotive radiator reduces coolant pressure drop with a novel flow turning structure integrally molded into the inlet header tank, opposite the inlet pipe. A pair of compound curved surfaces, sloping toward opposite directions from a crest edge, split and divide the flow leaving the inlet pipe and send it proportionately toward opposite ends of the tank, smoothing out the flow transition and reducing the attendant pressure loss. The curved surfaces also have a component of curvature toward the flow tubes, as well as being sloped toward opposite ends of the tank.

Fluid flow heat exchanger with reduced pressure drop

A heat exchanger core (20) has tubes (22) which are stiffer and more resistant to core assembly compression at the elongated tube edges (24). Corrugated cooling fins (46) stacked between the tubes (22) have fin walls (48) that cross the stiffer tube edges (24) and a series of vane like louvers (54, 56) that are regularly spaced along the fin walls (48). The outboard louvers (56) on both sides of each fin wall (48) are strategically shortened, as compared to the longer inboard louvers (54) so that the fin walls (48) will be stiffened less, and less subject to buckling when the core (20) is stacked during assembly.

Compression tolerant louvered heat exchanger fin

A corrugated cooling fin has a louver pattern in which the louvers in a first, lead set, successively increase in tilt angle, moving in the direction of air flow. Matching louvers in a trailing set successively decrease in tilt angle correspondingly. As a consequence, air flow is turned through the lead set, and turned back through the trailing set, in a successive, incremental fashion. The deflected air flow curve is steeper and higher, and the heat rejection rate for the fin increases enough to compensate for an increase in pressure drop across the fin.

A louvered, corrugated cooling fin (42) has its louvers (48) bent out of the fin walls (44) in a novel configuration. Rather than being bent out of the fin wall (44) about central, lengthwise axes that are square to the fin wall (44), the louvers (48) are bent out, at shallow angles, about axes that run corner to corner of the louver, axes which are not square to the fin wall (44). As a consequence, rather than moving on lengthwise half of the louver (48) to each side of the fin wall (44), one diagonal half of the louver (44) is moved to each side of the fin wall (44). Another consequence is that diagonally opposed corners of the louvers (48) are shifted out of constricted areas (C) between the fin wall (44), and into less constricted areas (O), allowing greater louver length, greater effective louver opening depth (D'), and better overall air flow.

An automotive dual radiator and condenser assembly with optimized structural and thermal capabilities. The two halves or layers of the dual assembly are interconnected by a pair of widely spaced, narrow webs, which webs interconnect two halves of a slotted tandem header plate unit. The webs, though small, are sufficient to maintain all components of the whole assembly properly and rigidly spaced at all times, during assembly, during brazing, and during and after installation. The two webs also represent the only significant direct heat conduction path between the radiator and condenser, so that thermal efficiency is comparable to a pair of non connected units.

Method of making a dual radiator and condenser assembly

A draincock assembly is designed so it may be molded with the radiator tank. The draincock assembly includes a drain for draining fluid from the heat exchanger. The drain includes a cam surface which receives a pin of a draincock therein. The draincock moves rotationally about and axially along a longitudinal axis defined by the drain between open and closed positions in a path defined by the pin moving along the cam surface. A detent is molded to the cam surface and prevents movement of the pin of the draincock therepast unless a rotational force is applied to the handle of the draincock. An O-ring at the end of the cylindrical body of the draincock provides a seal wherein no fluid may exit through the drain nipple until the O-ring moves past the drain nipple, creating a drainage path from the radiator tank.
