Aqueous well treatment fluid compositions with biocidal activity are disclosed comprising a polymer for modifying fluid viscosity in the aqueous fluid, an organic monocarboxylic peracid being present in an anti-microbial amount of about 1 ppm to about 1000 ppm, and a controlled amount of hydrogen peroxide also being present. Peracetic acid is the preferred peracid. The viscosity-modifying polymer in the aqueous well treatment fluid composition may serve to reduce friction in the fluid or increase fluid viscosity. A method of using such compositions is also disclosed.

Combustion flue gas containing NOand SOis treated to remove NOin a multistep system in which NOis reduced in the flue gas stream via selective catalytic reduction or selective non-catalytic reduction with ammonia or an ammonia-forming compound, followed treatment with hydrogen peroxide to remove residual ammonia and, optionally, treatment with an alkali reagent to reduce residual NOin the flue gas stream. The NO-depleted flue gas stream may also be subjected to a desulfurization treatment for removal of SO.

Aqueous well treatment fluid compositions are disclosed comprising an aqueous fluid containing polymer or copolymer for modifying fluid viscosity of the aqueous fluid and, in addition, an agent for effecting a controlled reduction in the aqueous fluid viscosity in a subterranean environment. The viscosity-reducing agent comprises a dilute concentration of peracetic acid. A method of using such compositions in oil- and gas-field treatment operations is also disclosed.

Concentrated aqueous hydrogen peroxide or another reactive compound in a liquid carrier is activated by atomization and contact with a suitable catalyst that is concurrently atomized in a carrier liquid. Concentrated hydrogen peroxide and a hydrogen peroxide activation catalyst are atomized into a droplet spray for catalytic activation of the hydrogen peroxide in this invention, useful for treatment of a combustion flue gas containing contaminants such as NOand/or Hg.

A flue gas desulfurization process in which a SO-containing flue gas stream is contacted with a recirculating stream of an aqueous medium containing concentrated sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide, to yield a desulfurized flue gas stream and to produce additional sulfuric acid in the aqueous medium. A portion of the recirculating aqueous sulfuric acid stream is diverted for recovery of the additional sulfuric acid as gypsum in a neutralization step, and the process parameters are adjusted so that the heat of reaction generated during the neutralization step is sufficient to evaporate the free water that is present and yield a gypsum product that is substantially dry.

Flue gas desulfurization process utilizing hydrogen peroxide

An aqueous fluid having a viscosity greater than the viscosity of water is contacted with a water soluble material for a time and at a temperature sufficient to reduce the viscosity of the aqueous fluid to a value which is less than about 10 percent of the initial viscosity of the aqueous fluid. The water soluble material is an alkali metal peroxide or a combination of an alkali metal peroxide and a transition metal-containing compound.

The invention is a process for treating waste slurry generated in the electric furnace production of phosphorus in which a superatmospheric reactor is operated at an elevated temperature to destroy cyanides, phosphorus, and phosphides present in the waste. The process transforms wastes from the phosphorus electric furnace process into non-hazardous solid, liquid, and gaseous wastes that meet environmental regulatory requirements regarding solids for phosphorous, cyanide, phosphine and cyanide flux, and TCLP metals, and regarding the filtrate for UTS metals.

Enzymes are immobilized for use in non-aqueous enzymatic reactions by dehydrating hydrocolloid gel beads having an average particle size of 5 to 150 microns and a network structure capable of swelling in aqueous media, immersing or suspending the dehyrated gel beads in an aqueous solution of enzyme where the beads swell and imbibe the enzyme solution, optionally dehydrating the resultant enzyme-containing gel beads and recovering the gel beads containing the enzyme. In a specific method, the hydrocolloid is carrageenan such a kappa carragennan, the enzyme is subtilisin Carlsberg, the aqueous enzyme solution contains 0.05% to 40 wt % enzyme and the amount of enzyme imbibed is 0.05 to 0.5 grams of enzyme per gram of dehydrated gel beads.

Process for recovering cyanide values from a mill tailings stream remaining after gold and silver have been leached from an ore, by treating the tailings stream containing both ore insolubles and remaining cyanide leachant, without a preliminary filtration, to acidification with an acid to a pH of at least 4, stripping the cyanide values therefrom with a stripping gas in a stripping column such as a baffle plate column wherein the average residence time of the column is sufficiently low that the pH of the stream does not rise above about 4 and the ore insolubles do not plug the column, introducing the stripping gas and stripped cyanide values into an absorbing column containing an alkaline liquor to absorb the cyanide values, recovering the absorbed cyanide values, and removing a stripped tailings stream reduced in cyanide values.

Recovery of cyanide from precious metal tailings

A process is provided to react anhydrous carbonate with a particle size between 300 and 74 micrometers and hydrogen peroxide containing a hydroxyalkylidene diphosphonic acid to produce sodium carbonate perhydrate containing 13% to 141/2% active oxygen. The process differs from the prior art in that reaction mixture is substantially dry at all times. The product is stable even without added stabilizers.
