A rearview assembly for a vehicle is provided including a mirror element. The mirror element includes a substrate having a front surface and a rear surface and a transflective coating associated with one of the front surface and the rear surface of the substrate. The transflective coating including a first layer having a high refractive index, a second layer having a low refractive index, a third layer comprising silicon, a fourth layer having a low refractive index, and a fifth layer having a high refractive index. The mirror element may be an electro-optic mirror element.

A rearview system may comprise a light sensor assembly having: a photosensor operable to detect light and generate a signal based, at least in part, on the detected light; a dichroic filter in optical communication with the photosensor and operable to filter light; and a rearview assembly having an electro-optic element may comprise an electro-optic medium and operable to variably change the amount of light passing through the electro-optic medium based, at least in part, on the signal. The dichroic filter may be configured to substantially inhibit light having a wavelength of less than 400 nm or greater than 650 nm from transmitting therethrough.

Universal sensor system for auto dimming control for different spectral outputs

A window operable to separate an interior from an exterior is disclosed. The window comprises a pressure pane and an anti-condensation assembly. The anti-condensation assembly is disposed in an interior direction relative the pressure pane. Further, the anti-condensation assembly comprises a substantially transparent substrate disposed in a spaced apart relationship relative the pressure pane. Additionally, the anti-condensation assembly comprises a resistively heatable layer associated with the first substrate. The resistively heatable layer is operable to generate heat when an electrical current is applied thereto. Accordingly, application of power to the resistively heatable layer may serve to reduce or eliminate the presence of visible condensation in the window.

Anti-condensation assembly

A window control system includes a plurality of electro-optic devices configured to control a transmittance of light through each of the plurality of zones, and at least one sensor configured to identify an intensity of light transmitted through the at least one window. A controller k in communication with the electro-optic devices and the at least one sensor. The controller is configured to independently control the transmittance of the light through each of the zones based on at least one of a direction of the light and an intensity of the light detected in a passenger compartment of a vehicle.

A laser ablated product exhibits a diffraction severity of less than about 5. The product may include a substrate that is at least partially transparent to visible light, and a periodic structure formed on at least one surface of the substrate by laser ablation. The periodic structure has a period in at least one direction of at least about 4,500 nm to at most about 850,000 nm, and the periodic structure has a peak-to-valley dimension of less than about 25 nm. The product may be employed in an electrochromic device, such as a vehicle rearview mirror assembly.

A controller system configured to clear an electro-optic device may include an electro-optic device having a first substrate having a first surface and a second surface, the second surface having a first layer of electrically conductive material disposed thereon; a second substrate having a first surface having a second layer of electrically conductive material disposed thereon, and a second surface, the second substrate being approximately parallel to the first substrate such that a chamber is defined by the first and second substrates; and an electro-optic medium disposed in the chamber defined by the first and second substrates and in contact with the first and second layers of electrically conductive material; a controller in communication with the electro-optic device, wherein the controller is configured to control electrical power supplied to the electro-optic device and a potentiometer in communication with the electro-optic device and with the controller.

Pulse-width modulation for clearing electro-optic device

A laser ablation process can be configured to reduce the appearance of or eliminate a potentially objectionable diffraction effect that can occur when a workpiece or product that has been subjected to the ablation process interacts with light. The diffraction effect can be reduced by introducing irregularity into the arrangement of overlapping laser spots during the process. Other process parameters may be modified to reduce the diffraction effect, such as laser scan speed, laser pulse frequency, the position of the focal plane of the laser, the configuration of raster lines, or the energy profile of the laser beam, for example. The process modifications and configurations are particularly useful with products including an ablated surface that is intended to reflect light or to allow light to pass therethrough as part of its function.

Laser ablation with reduced visual effects

A method for removing a material from a surface of a substrate includes impinging a laser beam on the material during a first sweep to remove the material from the surface along a first line and impinging the laser beam on the material during a second sweep to remove the material from the surface along a second line adjacent to the first line. The first line includes first artifacts that form a first portion of an array of artifacts on the surface. The second line includes second artifacts that form a second portion of the array of artifacts on the surface. A first laser pulse of the laser beam corresponding with the second sweep is synchronized with a start of the second sweep when transitioning between the first line and the second line such that the start of the second sweep coincides with the first laser pulse.

Reducing diffraction effects on an ablated surface

An optical assembly is provided that includes an electro-optic element that is configured to transition between a substantially clear state and a substantially darkened state. The electro-optic element can include an electrochromic polymer or network film that is substantially aligned with light having a predetermined polarization such that the electro-optic element is variably transmissive to the polarized light.

A vehicular rearview assembly is provided that includes a display configured to emit light of a first polarization. A reflective polarizer is positioned adjacent the display. The reflective polarizer is configured to transmit the light of the first polarization and reflect light of a second polarization and an electro-optic element is positioned on an opposite side of the reflective polarizer than the display. The electro-optic element is configured to transition between substantially clear and substantially darkened states. The electro-optic element includes a plurality of electrochromic molecules substantially aligned with the second polarization of the light such that the electro-optic element is configured to substantially absorb the light of the second polarization when in the darkened state.
