A method for transferring an image to a medium includes: generating a substantially uniform line of radiation; producing diffractive light from the uniform line of radiation; passing zero order diffractive light to the medium in a telecentric fashion while blocking non-zero order diffractive light; adjusting image magnification on the medium independent of image focus in response to the zero order diffractive light; and adjusting image focus on the medium independent of image magnification in response to the zero order magnification-adjusted diffractive light. An optical imaging head for transferring an image onto a medium via the above method includes: a line illumination module for generating a substantially uniform line of radiation; a grating light valve which receives the line of radiation and generates diffractive orders of modulated radiation; a first lens group for adjusting image magnification independent of image focus; a second lens group for passing radiation to the medium in a telecentric fashion, the second lens group adjusting image focus independent of image magnification; and a stop, placed between the first and second lens groups, having a single aperture for passing zero order radiation and blocking non-zero order radiation.

A correction element assembly for correcting misalignment of a beam of radiation with respect to a location on a target includes a correction element housing, and first and second piezo elements. The correction element is fixedly mounted in the housing and moveable therewith. The piezo elements are supported by a member having a first portion and a second portion. The first piezo element is mounted to the first portion of the member and to said housing, and moves the housing in a first direction. The second piezo element is mounted to the second portion of the member and to a base, and moves the housing in a second direction substantially perpendicular to the first direction.

A method for making a lithographic printing plate according to the silver salt diffusion transfer process image-wise exposes an imaging element with a high intensity short time scanning exposure. The imaging element comprises on a support in the order given a silver halide emulsion layer and a layer containing physical development nuclei. A thus obtained image-wise exposed imaging element is subsequently developed in the presence of a developing agent and silver halide solvent. The image-wise exposure is focused substantially within the silver halide emulsion layer of the imaging element. The present invention further provides an apparatus for carrying out the above method.

Method and apparatus for obtaining lithographic plate

A system for forming optical beam spots of different sizes on an imaging surface, includes an emitter configured to emit an optical beam along a path. The optical beam is focused at a first focus point and impinges upon the imaging surface downstream of the first focus point. A lens, having a single fixed magnification other than one, is located between the first focus point and the imaging surface so as to be in the optical path of the optical beam. The lens is moveable between a first position located a first distance from the first focus point and a second distance from a second focus point of the optical beam which is downstream of the lens and a second position located the second distance from the first focus point and the first distance from the second focus point. With the lens at the first position the optical beam forms a beam spot of a first size on the imaging surface and with the lens at the second position the optical beam forms a beam spot of a second size, which is different than the first beam size, on the imaging surface.

A correction element assembly for correcting misalignment of a beam of radiation with respect to a location on a target, includes a housing having a correction element fixedly mounted therein. A flexure is attached to the housing and at least two drive devices are disposed radially around the housing. Each of the drive devices is operable to apply a force to the housing to thereby deflect the flexure causing the housing to move such that said correction element moves in a cyclic fashion about its beam axis.

A scanning system for scanning an imaging surface includes a radiation emitter configured to emit a beam of radiation directed towards a deflector for scanning the beam onto the imaging surface. A detector detects any misalignment of the beam with respect to the deflector. A driver moves a correction element substantially perpendicular to the beam axis of the correction element to correct for the detected misalignment during scanning of the imaging surface.

Method and apparatus for obtaining a lithographic plate

An inclined mirror is provided in a cylindrical housing which has an open end and a closed end. An optical planar glass plate or window is mounted at the open end of the cylindrical housing. A laser beam enters the housing through the window and is reflected off the inclined mirror. The reflected beam leaves the housing through a side aperture in the housing. The cylindrical housing is rotated to scan the beam through a range of angles. Rotation of this optical system induces astigmatism in the beam due to the deformation of the inclined mirror at high rotational speed. If the window is tilted so that the entering laser beam is no longer normal to the window surface, then the window will induce a degree of astigmatism in the laser beam. The angular position of the window can be adjusted relative to the inclined mirror, thus compensating for the dynamic astigmatism due to rotation. A wedge is added to the planar surface of the tilted window to compensate for the coma induced in the beam by the tilt of the planar window.
