The reception of repeated bursts of identical information in a radio communications system is made faster and more secure by a receiving unit including a device for receiving and processing incoming signals from a transmitting unit in the same radio communications system, a buffer for temporarily storing repeated bursts, and a device for equalizing and combining at least two of the repeated bursts. The receiving unit may also include (for diversity) a duplicated receiving device for receiving signals from two different antennas and an equalizing and combining device for equalizing and combining the signals received by the duplicated receiving device. The receiving unit may be located in a radio base station or in a radio terminal in a radio communications system. The repeated bursts are received and stored in buffers, before the information of at least two repeated bursts is equalized and combined to form a more reliable signal.

Method and device in a radio communications system

The present invention relates generally to the problems associated with sectorization of cells in cellular communications systems, and more particularly to interference between sectors. The invention provides the possibility of flexibly distributing hardware between sectors in a cell by allowing one transmitter to be shared by all the sectors. Since a beacon signal must be transmitted to each sector in a cell, it can be combined with the signal from the transmitter before being transmitted from an antenna. Thus it is necessary to only deploy one carrier for the beacon. Interference reduction in sectored sites is also improved. In addition, different antenna patterns may be combined to provide the site with all kinds of coverage patterns. Downlink diversity is furthermore attainable by having overlapping uncorrelated antenna patterns.

Adaptive sectorization

A radio communications system includes a radio base station provided with an array antenna. The antenna lobes of the array antenna can be directed onto a terminal with the aid of a generated directional estimate. The directional estimate is based on a signal received from the terminal. A method registers a generated directional estimate together with a terminal recognition character. The directional estimate is read when the radio connection with the terminal changes channel. The antenna lobe is directed on the basis of the direction estimate, immediately communication commences over the new channel. A radio base station is equipped with a database in which the terminal recognition character and the direction estimate are registered.

Method and arrangement relating to radio communications systems

In a cellular communication system that has a tight reuse pattern, a method for transmitting bursts containing interleaved and non-interleaved data bits over RF channels assigned to a plurality of communication cells using two power levels. The bursts containing non-interleaved data bit, for example, frequency correction data bits and synchronization data bits, are transmitted using a first transmit power level, P1, and the bursts containing interleaved data bits, for example traffic data bits, are transmitted using a second transmit power level, P,, with the first transmit power level, P,, being greater than the second transmit power level, P,.

Communicating signaling information in a cellular system that has a tight frequency reuse pattern

In a cellular mobile radio system, co-channel radio base stations are provided with a time reference signal being a synchronizing signal or a time reference from another co-channel radio base station. Each co-channel radio base station is also provided with a radio base station specific time offset differing between the co-channel radio base stations by at least a predetermined value which prevents known sequences in desired signals and known sequences in interfering signals from overlapping in a disturbing way at reception. In each co-channel radio base station, the time reference signal and the radio base station specific offset are used for the timing of sending bursts downlink from the co-channel radio base stations towards mobile radio stations. Each radio base station has functions receiving the time reference signal, storing the time offset and using the time reference signal and the time offset for the timing of the burst termination on the downlink.
