An orthodontic bracket or similar orthodontic appliance is made of a polycrystalline ceramic having a translucency which minimizes visibility of the appliance when mounted on a tooth. The ceramic is formed by pressing a powder material, such as high purity aluminum oxide, and sintering to yield a single phase appliance having substantially zero porosity and an average grain size preferably in the range of 10 to 30 microns. The substantially color-free ceramic appliance has desirable strength and other mechanical properties combined with a translucency which permits the natural color of the tooth to diffusely show through in a fashion tending to make the appliance blend with and disappear against the tooth.

Ceramic orthodontic brackets are bonded to teeth with dental adhesive. Each bracket has a silica-containing layer on the tooth facing base of the bracket. A silanation layer is also applied to the base. The silanation layer is deposited from a solution containing a first silane coupling agent reactive with organic resin in the adhesive and a second silane coupling agent having a non-reactive orgainc group. Collectively the silanes occupy all of the silanation sites on the silica-containing substrate. By controlling the ratio of reactive and non-reactive silane coupling agents, the bond strength between the substrate and the adhesive can be controlled. A set of ceramic orthodontic brackets can have uniform force of removal by varying the porportions of silane coupling agents on the brackets.

A liquid meter assembly for collecting, metering and monitoring liquid is disclosed. The assembly comprises a container for collecting the liquid, an electrically powered strain gauge suspension device for supporting the container and for determining the weight of the liquid collected in the container and a handle on the container for interconnecting with the strain gauge suspension device. A length of tubing is attached to the container and adapted for interconnecting with the source of the liquid. A tubing support system is included on the strain gauge suspension device for fixedly supporting the tubing to substantially inhibit influence on weight determination due to any movement thereon. A power supply is included in the assembly for supplying power to the strain gauge suspension device.

Transducer housing assembly for monitoring blood pressure and the like

A pressure transducer assembly is disclosed for directly monitoring pressure in a fluid which flows through the assembly. The assembly includes a housing defining a chamber therewithin and having an inlet port and an outlet port in fluid-flow communication with the chamber. An electrically insulated body element is sealed within the chamber dividing the chamber into a first chamber and a second chamber. The first chamber is in fluid-flow communication with the inlet and outlet ports. The second chamber is separated from the first chamber by a fluid-tight seal such that any fluid present in the first chamber cannot enter the second chamber. A pressure transducer sensor is secured in the insulated body and exposed to the first chamber such that the sensor can determine the pressure in a fluid in the first chamber and convert the pressure into electric impulses. The sensor is separated from the fluid in the first chamber by an insulating medium across which fluid pressure can be determined. Connected to the sensor are electrical conductors which extend through the insulated body and into the second chamber. The second chamber provides an engagement site for an electrical connector which can interconnect with the electrical conductors and provide an electrical path through which the electric impulses generated by the sensor can be transferred to a monitor.
