A flexible splice for a submarine cable of the type comprising a plurality of conductors (21, 22, 23) insulated by paper impregnated with oil under pressure (24) inside an oil-tight sheath (20) protected by at least one layer of armoring, the splice being characterized in that it comprises a flexible sheath (2) connected on either side of the interconnections (41, 42, 43) between said conductors to two rigid connection sleeves (1, 1') fittable around respective centering rings (7, 7') bonded to the oil-tight sheath (20) of the cable and then bonded to said sleeves, said flexible sheath being divided into two lengths (2, 2') which are interconnected by means of an inner ring (15) which they overlap prior to being bonded together and covered with a tubular shell (4) constituting an oil-tight sheath which is bonded at each end to said connection sleeves (1, 1'), said sleeves including at least one orifice (33) closable by means of a stopper (30) in order to put the splice under oil pressure.

A fixed position machine for coiling down a cable (8) in successive layers inside a tank (1) comprises a horizontal arm (12) rotatably mounted on a column situated (11) on the axis of the tank. The cable to be coiled down passes under the tank and round an inlet curve (22) fitted with rolls (21) to pass up through the column, over a fixed guide pulley (15) at the top of the column to deflect the cable to run horizontally along the arm, and then over a moving pulley (16) which is movable along the arm to direct the cable coming from the fixed guide pulley down into the tank above any point between the sides of the tank. Such a machine is mainly for coiling down electric cable in very long single-piece lengths and in tanks with little head room.

A splice for splicing together the steel armor wires (3, 3') of two armored electric cable ends (1, 1') after the remainder of the cable has been spliced, and in which the end of each armor wire of one of the cable ends is joined to the end of a corresponding armor wire of the other cable end by means of a sleeve (4). Each sleeve comprises a right-and-left screw link into which correspondingly right hand and left hand threaded armor wires ends are screwed. The cable may be a submarine cable for transporting electrical power.
