An electro-optic modulator includes a waveguide of a nonlinear optical material and an electrode line for generating an electrical field in a modulating region of the waveguide when a voltage is applied to the electrode line, thereby modulating light passing through the waveguide. Therein, the forward electro-optic response of the modulating region is the same as the backward electro-optic response; and the electro-optic response has a band-pass or a low-pass characteristic. A distance measuring device includes a light source emitting light, and such an electro-optic modulator arranged such that the emitted light passes through the electro-optic modulator in a first direction before being emitted from the distance measuring device, and after being reflected from a target passes through the electro-optic modulator in a second direction which is opposite to the first direction.

An electric-optic modulator includes a block of crystal having electro-optic properties, the block extending lengthways along a long axis and having a light guide which extends between a light guide input and a light guide output. An electric modulation signal acts on an interaction zone of the block via coplanar electrodes together with the light guide via a dielectric layer. The electrodes are disposed on a main long face of the block and the interaction zone is elongated more or less along the long axis. The light to be modulated arrives through an input optical fiber which is connected to the light guide at the light guide input on a first face of the block. The modulated light leaves the modulator through an output optical fiber connected to the light guide output on a second face of the block. The first face and the second face are one single face (D) which is parallel to the long axis.

Electro-optic modulator, the production method therefor and the block for implementing same

An optical modulator includes a waveguide structure forming a two-wave interferometer made of an electro-optical material, and two arms, a set of electrodes connected to a controllable electric source for applying an electric field on at least one of the arms of the interferometer, so as to vary the phase difference between light waves along one or the other of the two arms. The modulator includes two sets of electrodes placed respectively on each of the interferometer arms, one in the non-reversed region of the electro-optical material, the other in the reversed region, and a delay line placed between the control electronics of the electrode sets introducing a delay equal to the light propagation time in the first electrode set.

Wide band electro-optical modulators

A miniature optical component formed by the mounting of an integrated optic circuit chip has waveguides on a motherboard for connection with optic fibers. The fibers are positioned and aligned in parallel grooves hollowed out in the motherboard. The surface of the motherboard is hollowed out with female microstructures in the shape of axial buttonholes with sub-millimetrical dimensions, and the face of the chip has projecting male microstructures formed by metal deposition, capable of fitting into and sliding axially in the female microstructures during the mounting of the component. There is also provided a method for mounting a miniature component of this kind and a method for the matrix-based manufacture of a motherboard and a matrix device.

The invention relates to an optical transmission system that implements encrypting of an information carrying signal by deterministic chaos. The system includes a transmitter (1), a receiver (4), and one transmission channel coupled between the transmitter (1) and the receiver (4). A multi-purpose component with integrated optics includes an optical light guide (12) formed on one face of a substrate (10) made of a double refracting material having neutral axes orientated so that one electromagnetic wave extending into the guide (12) is split up into two waves having polarizations perpendicular to each other and along the neutral axes. A power source (18) applies an electric filed perpendicular to the optical light guide (12) and uniformly along the guide (12). Two rectilinear polarizers (20, 22) with polarization directions (d1, d2) parallel to each other are each disposed at one extremity of the guide (12). The component also includes focussing means (24, 26, 28, 30). The component has particular utility for tuneable optical filtering and optical telecommunications.

Multipurpose component with integrated optics and distribution network

It includes an electro-optical device (5) forming a spectral filter with an electrically modulable transfer function, this electro-optical device being provided so as to select a particular longitudinal mode from all the longitudinal modes able to oscillate inside the external cavity for which the source (1) is provided and which is ended by a reflecting device (3) towards the source of the light emitted by this source, and an electro-optical device (4) for varying the optical length of the cavity, this variation device being placed in the cavity and provided so as to continuously move the position of the selected longitudinal mode, each electro-optical device including a compact electro-optical crystal.
