Disclosed is a urethane-based composition of value in surface coating applications, including treatment of glass or textiles, in adhesives and in the manufacture of a stabilized latex. The composition comprises a polyfunctional liquid urethane-containing adduct wherein said adduct contains as a first functional group at least one isocyanate moiety per molecule, and a second functional group per molecule which is not an isocyanate moiety and which is not reactive towards isocyanate functionality. The second functional group can comprise ester, nitrile, halogen, halocarbon, siloxyl, silyl, alkyne or alkene, or combinations of two or more thereof.

The adduct having a linear or preferably branched structure comprises a plurality of internal urethane linkages and one or more terminal carboxylic acid groups per molecule. Such acid-funtionalized polyurethane adducts find value in the manufacture of crosslinked aqueous rubber latexes such as might be used in paint compositions.

Disclosed is a process for preparing an open-celled rigid polyurethane foam by reacting a polyisocyanate with a polyol in the presence of a blowing agent, usually water, and a cell opening agent. The cell opening agent comprises a combination of a polyoxyalkylene polysiloxane having a cloud point of 65.degree. C. or less, and a second substance that has a critical surface free energy of less than about 23 mJ/m.sup.2. This invention relates to the use of a barrier film, being a thermoplastic linear polyolefin resin, to protect a styrenic resin sheet which constitutes the inner liner wall of an insulative cabinet wall of, for example, a refrigeration appliance unit from attack by the halogen-containing blowing agents present in the insulative polyurethane foam found within the cabinet wall. Preferred thermoplastic linear polyolefin resins are linear low density polyethylene.

Polyisocyanate-based foams having a uniformly fine cell size are prepared by reacting a polyisocyanate with an isocyanate-reactive compound in the presence of a blowing agent mixture comprising a hydrocarbon component which has four or more carbon atoms and a polyfluorocarbon component which has a boiling point of from about 283 K. to about 393 K. at 760 mm Hg and wherein the boiling point:molecular weight ratio of said polyfluorocarbon component is less than or equal to 1.7. The hydrocarbon component is present in from about 5 to about 95 mole percent and the polyfluorocarbon in from about 95 to about 5 mole percent based on total amounts of hydrocarbon and polyfluorocarbon.

This invention relates to a process for preparing a rigid, closed-celled polyisocyanate-based foam in the presence of a blowing agent composition. The blowing agent composition comprises one or more organic compounds, particularly halocarbons, having a boiling point of less than or equal to 272K at atmospheric pressure, and further is substantially free of organic compounds having a boiling point of 273K or greater. Preferred halocarbons are chlorofluoroethanes and fluoroethanes.

This invention relates to rigid closed-celled polyisocyanate-based foams exhibiting improved dimensional stability and a process for their preparation. In particular, it relates to foams containing within their cells, when initially prepared, a gas mixture comprising theoretically from about 5 to 70 mole percent carbon dioxide and from about 40 to about 95 mole percent of an organic compound mixture. The organic compound mixture itself, comprises (a) from 40 to 95 mole percent of an organic compound having a boiling point greater than or equal to about 283K, and (b) from 5 to 60 mole percent of an organic compound having a boiling point equal to or less than about 266K. Halocarbons are the preferred organic compounds for components (a) and (b).

Rigid closed-cell polyisocyanate-based foams are prepared by the reaction of polyisocyanate with a polyol composition having an average hydroxyl number of about 100 to about 500 and comprising at least one polyether polyol containing four or more active hydrogens and having a hydroxyl number of from about 50 to about 500. The blowing of the foam is essentially with carbon dioxide generated from the reaction of water with polyisocyanate so as to provide foams of the desired density containing at least 40 mole percent carbon dioxide in their cells.
