This invention relates to a device for removing and transporting articles, such as ophthalmic lens mold sections, or packaging elements from a mold. The invention, in one embodiment includes first, second, and third assemblies; the first of which removes the articles from the molding station at a first location and transports them to a second location; the second assembly receives the articles from the first assembly and transports them to a third location, and the third assembly receives the articles from the second assembly and transports them to a fourth location. A second embodiment includes a flipper assembly disposed between the first and second assemblies, which flipper receives the articles from the first assembly and inverts them before depositing them onto the second assembly. This second embodiment is useful in conjunction with molded articles which are transported to the flipper assembly in an inverted position. A third embodiment includes second and third assemblies which further include means for altering the relative spacing of the articles while the articles are transported.

This invention relates to a method for removing and transporting articles, such as ophthalmic lens mold sections, or packaging elements from a mold. The invention, in one embodiment includes first, second, and third assemblies; the first of which removes the articles from the molding station at a first location and transports them to a second location; the second assembly receives the articles from the first assembly and transports them to a third location, and the third assembly receives the articles from the second assembly and transports them to a fourth location. A second embodiment includes a flipper assembly disposed between the first and second assemblies, which flipper receives the articles from the first assembly and inverts them before depositing them onto the second assembly. This second embodiment is useful in conjunction with molded articles which are transported to the flipper assembly in an inverted position. A third embodiment includes second and third assemblies which further include means for altering the relative spacing of the articles while the articles are transported.

A rotational indexing base curve deposition array for assembling contact lens base curves and front curves with a prescribed and programmable angular orientation to produce a contact lens having a selected axis placement therein, such as a toric axis for a toric contact lens. An array of front curve molds are arranged in a support pallet with a dosed amount of monomer mixture deposited into each of the front curve molds. An array of deposition tubes, positioned in a support plate and coupled to a vacuum source, is used to pick up and support an array of base curve molds. Each of the deposition tubes is then angularly rotated in to the support plate to a selected angularly indexed position therein. A common angular rotational drive is coupled to each of the deposition tubes in the array to angular index each of the deposition tubes to a precise angular position in the support plate. The common angular rotational drive is driven by a stepper motor which can be controlled in a programmable manner to change the selected angularly indexed position. The stepper motor drives moveable racks, which drive pinion gears around the deposition gears. The angularly indexed array of base curve molds is then assembled over the array of front curve molds to produce toric lenses having first and second optical surfaces which are precisely angularly indexed relative to each other.

Demolding apparatus for reliably and repeatedly mechanically separating contact lens mold assemblies without damaging the contact lens formed therebetween. The mold assembly includes a frontcurve mold having a central mold section with a surrounding flange, and a corresponding backcurve mold also having a central mold section with a surrounding flange, with a contact lens being molded therebetween. The demolding apparatus includes a conductive heating probe which contacts the backcurve mold of the lens mold assembly to conductively heat the backcurve mold. Heat is conducted by the backcurve mold to cause a temperature gradient between the backcurve mold and the lens being demolded. The temperature gradient causes a differential expansion and shifting of the surface of the backcurve mold relative to the surface of the lens to lessen the adhesion therebetween to assist in separation of the molds, while leaving the lens in the frontcurve mold. The conductive heating probe includes a convex heating surface which contacts and is the same general shape as a concave surface on the backcurve mold, and can also include a compliant heat conductor to conform to the concave surface on the backcurve mold. In one embodiment, the apparatus includes a conductive heating probe assembly having an n.times.m array of conductive heating probes which contact each backcurve mold of an n.times.m array of molds assemblies positioned in a support pallet.

An automated demolding apparatus for reliably and repeatedly mechanically separating contact lens mold portions of a mold assembly without damaging the contact lens formed there between. Before demolding, the second mold portion is irradiated by a laser beam, which is absorbed thereby to cause a substantial temperature gradient between the second mold portion and the contact lens being demolded.

Demolding apparatus for reliably and repeatedly mechanically separating contact lens mold assemblies without damaging the contact lens formed therebetween. The mold assembly includes a frontcurve mold having a central mold section with a surrounding flange, and a corresponding backcurve mold also having a central mold section with a surrounding flange, with a contact lens being molded therebetween. A support pallet is provided for supporting the mold assembly. A wedge separating fixture provides at least one separating wedge positioned between the spaced flanges of the mold assembly, and the wedge separating fixture and support pallet are translated relative to each other to progressively separate the frontcurve mold from the backcurve mold. In one embodiment the wedge separating fixture is stationarily mounted suspended above the support pallet, and a drive conveys the support pallet relative to the stationarily mounted wedge separating fixture to a position whereat the separating wedge is positioned between the spaced flanges of the mold assembly and separates or demolds the frontcurve and backcurve molds.

Apparatus for removing and transporting ophthalmic lens mold sections from a mold, and generally comprising first, second, and third assemblies. The first assembly removes the lens mold sections from the mold and transports the lens mold sections to a first location, the second assembly receives the lens mold sections from the first assembly and transports the lens mold sections to a second location, and the third assembly receives the lens mold sections from the second assembly and transports the lens mold sections to a third location. Preferably, the first assembly includes a hand to receive the lens mold sections from the mold and to releasably hold the lens mold sections, and a support subassembly connected to the hand to support the hand and to move the hand between the mold and the first location. The second assembly preferably includes a support frame, a platform to receive the lens mold sections from the first assembly and supported by the support frame for movement between the first and second locations, and moving means for moving the platform along the support frame and between these first and second locations. The preferred design of the third assembly includes a transport subassembly and a support column. The transport subassembly receives the lens mold sections from the second assembly, releasably holds those lens mold sections, and carries the lens mold sections to the third location; and the support column supports the transport subassembly for movement between the second and third locations.
