Methods and systems for preventing serious injury or vehicle damage resulting from collisions between automotive vehicles and people, animals, or other objects are described. In some instances, the system may comprise an object detection system configured to detect a human prior to impact with an automotive vehicle comprising the object detection system, and further configured to send a first activation signal upon detection of the human; a first actuator attached to the automotive vehicle; and a protection plate operatively connected to the first actuator and mounted on a structural component of the automotive vehicle; where upon receipt of the first activation signal by the first actuator, the protection plate is deployed from a non-vertical orientation into a vertical orientation and is vertically-positioned between a level of a front bumper of the automotive vehicle and a surface on which the automotive vehicle is traveling.

Example illustrations herein are directed to systems and methods for determining whether a vehicle driver meets a seat belt criteria based upon a detection of each of a set of seat belt conditions. In an example, the set of conditions includes at least the vehicle driver occupying a driver seat of the vehicle, expiration of a minimum delay time after the vehicle driver is occupying the driver seat, and an engagement of a driver's seat belt latch with a corresponding buckle after the expiration of the minimum delay time, and a positioning of a driver's seat belt on a shoulder of the vehicle driver. The method may also include enabling a first vehicle feature if the vehicle driver meets the seat belt criteria. The first vehicle feature may be disabled if the vehicle driver does not meet the seat belt criteria.

Seatbelt interlock

A system for providing occupant restraint includes a seatbelt, a tensioning mechanism, and a locking mechanism. The seatbelt may include an upper portion and a lower portion, or just a single span. The tensioning mechanism is configured to remove slack in one or more portions of the seatbelt in response to an event such as an impact event. The locking mechanism is configured to lock an end of the seatbelt after the tensioning mechanism removes the slack, to prevent the seatbelt from extending. A connector may be included that defines an upper portion of the seatbelt and a lower portion of the seatbelt. The tensioning mechanism may include a load limiter to lessen a force transmitted to the seatbelt during tensioning. The load limiter may include an energy absorption element. The tensioning mechanism and the locking mechanism may be coupled to either span.

An airbag module for protecting the knees of an occupant of a vehicle includes an airbag formed by at least one panel of material, an inflator that produces gas that inflates the airbag into a deployed condition, a tether connected to the airbag for restraining upward movement of the airbag when the airbag begins to deploy, and a housing. Prior to deployment, the airbag is compacted in the storage condition. In the storage condition, the airbag includes a rolled portion and a folded portion, where the folded portion includes a half Z-shape fold.

Airbag module

A knee airbag apparatus includes a front panel configured to face toward an occupant when the knee airbag deploys and a rear panel configured to face toward an instrument panel when the knee airbag deploys. The rear panel is joined to the front panel to form an inflatable knee cushion configured to inflate to protect an occupant's knees during a crash event. The knee airbag further includes at least one internal tether extending between the front and rear panels. The internal tether is attached to the front panel at a front panel attachment location offset from a rear panel attachment location. The knee airbag further includes an external tether attached at one end to the front panel, and at a second end at the knee airbag housing.

Knee airbag

An airbag device for a vehicle, including an airbag package, a receptacle, and a flexible protective covering for the airbag. The flexible protective covering includes at least two flexible, sheet-like protective elements secured to the receptacle. The flexible, sheet-like protective elements are connected to one another via at least one separable tearing line. The flexible, sheet-like protective elements flank the airbag during initial inflation and expansion of the airbag. A flexible guide layer is arranged between the protective covering and the airbag package. The flexible guide layer is permanently connected to a first of the sheet-like protective elements, such that the first sheet-like protective element, together with the guide layer, forms a composite layer flanking the airbag during inflation.
