An apparatus for management of a spectral capacity of a wavelength division multiplexing, WDM, system includes at least one pair of transmission fibers provided for transporting optical signals. Each transmission fiber of a transmission fiber pair is connected to a first port of an optical circulator having at least two additional ports and adapted to transmit an incoming optical signal entering one of its ports via its next port. WDM subsystems configured with counter-propagating assignable wavelengths are connected to associated ports of the optical circulator of the apparatus.

The invention relates to a method for migrating data traffic from an existing optical WDM transmission system to a new optical WDM transmission system, the existing optical WDM transmission system using a first optical transmission band and the new optical WDM transmission system being capable of using a second optical transmission band. The second optical transmission band at least partially includes the first optical transmission band and a further extension band that does not overlap with the first optical transmission band, the method including the steps of. According to the invention, a migration filter device is used in order to connect, during a migration phase, the network nodes of the existing system and the network nodes of the new system to the network paths that have been used by the existing system. During the migration phase, both systems are operated in parallel, with the new system using the extension band only. In this way, during the migration phase, the data traffic handled by the existing system can stepwise be switched to the new system. After all data traffic has been switched to the new system, the existing system can be deinstalled. The migration filter devices can stepwise be deinstalled.

Provided is an optical network system and optical network unit (ONU) structure enabling a passive optical access network having a meshed structure with at least two central nodes and plurality of ONUs. One embodiment employs a partially or fully meshed structure of optical fibers between customer locations and multiple optical line terminal (OLT) locations creating a passive optical access network. The ONUs can communicate with a neighboring OLT or ONU using a symmetrical or asymmetrical TDM scheme, and convert between the different TDM schemes. For this purpose, the ONU structure includes two transceiver units, one connected to the western network port and the other to the eastern. The ONU can establish communication between either network port and a further ONU or an OLT, with the ONU controller adapted for passing through data, and converting TDM schemes.

The remote node comprises an optical connection network, a single transceiver device comprising an optical receiver unit and an optical transmitter unit, and an electronic controller device for controlling the transceiver device. In tuning mode, the controller unit can drive the transmitting unit so that the possible channel wavelengths are scanned through. The controller unit evaluates the reception signal fed to it from the receiving unit for whether abort criteria for tuning mode have been fulfilled or not, wherein the scanning process is continued until the abort criteria are fulfilled.

The present invention encompasses a method for 1+1 protection of an optical transmission path comprising a working path and a protection path that connect a first and second terminal node. In a working mode, an optical transmission signal is transmitted via the working path from the first to the second terminal node. At the second terminal node, the optical transmission signal is split into two optical sub-signals, and one of the optical sub-signals is sent via the protection path to a protection-path connection node as a working-path control signal. In the case of an interruption of the signal transmission via the working path, the protection-path connection node detects the absence of the working-path control signal and switches the system from the working mode to a protection mode in which signal transmission is conducted via a separate protection path.

Systems and methods for monitoring a data transmission link, especially an optical, bidirectional data transmission link, in which a digital transmit signal is transmitted on a first transmission path from a local end of the data transmission link toward a remote end of the data transmission link. A portion of the power of the transmit signal sent at the local end is transmitted, delayed by a non-zero delay time on a second transmission path as a control signal toward the remote end of the data transmission link. Both signals are received at the remote end and are tested for the presence of events of a predetermined type. A conclusion can be reached on the quality of the transmission link as a function of a time correlation and frequency of the appearance of events in the received transmit signal and in the received control signal.

A method for monitoring an optical transmission line in which digital optical signals are transmitted bidirectionally between a first and a second end point of the transmission line. At the first end point of the transmission line the digital optical signal to be transmitted to the second end point is amplitude-modulated with a preset frequency, with the modulation amplitude being small relative to the amplitude of the digital signal. At the second end point of the transmission line a small fraction of the power of the received digital signal is overcoupled passively on the optical transmission line in the direction towards the first end point and is transmitted to the first end point together with the digital signal to be transmitted from the second end point to the first end point of the optical transmission line. At the first end point the amplitude-modulated component of the received digital signal is detected. An interruption in the optical transmission line is determined when the power of the amplitude-modulated component or an associated optical or electrical characteristic parameter is smaller than a preset limit value.
