In example implementations, an apparatus is provided. The apparatus includes a cable interface, a video interface, an integrated chip, and a controller. The cable interface is to connect a host device via a cable. The video interface is to output video signals corresponding to visual data. The controller is communicatively coupled to the cable interface, the video interface, and the integrated chip. The controller assigns pairs of pins of the cable to transmit video signals based on the bandwidth used by the video signals. The controller also causes the host device to re-assign the pairs of pins of the cable to transmit the video signals.

Pin assignments based on bandwidth

Out-of-band switching of states of a computing device by a coupled peripheral device, are described. A sensor within the peripheral device may monitor an area in proximity to the peripheral device. A controller within the peripheral device may determine whether a user is present within the area. On determining the user to be present, a control signal may be generated. The control signal is conforms with the messaging protocol and causes the computing device to switch between an operational state and a low-power state. The controller may cause out-of-band transmission of the control signal to the computing device through the transmission interface.

Out-of-band transmissions of control signals

An example device includes a data port to provide a data channel to a host and a processor coupled to the data port. The processor includes an operational mode and a low-power mode in which the processor is to perform fewer operations than in the operational mode. The processor is to execute instructions in the operational mode and to update the instructions with updated instructions received via the data channel in the operational mode. The device further includes a side channel to receive a signal from the host to trigger the processor to switch from the low-power mode to the operational mode and to initiate update of the instructions with the updated instructions.
