A collimator () for a color over position light source () is provided. The collimator () comprises a focal point (F), an optical axis (OA) containing the focal point (F), an imaging element () arranged around or on the optical axis (OA) and several light spreading elements () ranged around the optical axis (OA) to receive at least one image from the imaging element (). A tubular light comprises an elongate light source () and a tubular housing () around the light source. An optical beam shaping arrangement () is provided within the housing. It has an effective focal distance, in the plane perpendicular to the length axis, which varies in dependence on the angular position around the optical beam shaping arrangement. The effective focal distance is longer for light in a light output optical axis direction than for light output laterally to the sides of the light output optical axis. This means the beam shaping, e.g. collimation, is greater at the edges of the light output beam than in the middle, so there is light mixing within the output beam.

Tubular light emitting device

A lighting module comprises an LED and a lens over the LED. The lens has a beam shaping surface and a pass through surface with a stepped profile. The steps of the stepped profile each comprise a riser portion and an output portion, wherein the riser portions are parallel with the ray direction passing through the surface at that location and the output portions are normal to the ray direction passing through the surface at that location. The pass through surface for example performs no beam shaping function. The stepped profile enables the thickness of the lens to be reduced to reduce the amount of material needed.

A lighting module has an LED (), a lens () over the LED to produce a beam-shaped output from the LED and a collimator () arranged to partially collimate the beam-shaped out-put. Blue light is provided at large angles to the normal, for example using a filter arrangement () over the collimator which is adapted to filter light from the collimator at relatively large angles to the normal. The filter arrangement does not filter light from the collimator at relatively small angles to the normal. Thus, the module provides white task light in a normal direction and blue ambient light at steep angles. The overall system can be compact and light efficient.

An LED light bulb has a light emitting bulb partwhich comprises a central corerunning from the top towards the bottom and which provides an open passageway at least at the top. The LEDs are mounted in thermal contact around the central core. This design provides an air flow to promote cooling of the LEDs. This in turn enables a reduced size and cost of the heat sink, or avoids the need for a heat sink altogether.

A light output device and manufacturing method in which an array of LEDs is embedded in an encapsulation layer. An array of cavities (or regions of different refractive index) is formed in the encapsulation layer. The cavities/regions have a density or size that is dependent on their proximity to the light emitting diode locations, in order to reduce hot spots (local high light intensity areas) and thereby render the light output more uniform over the area of the device.
