The invention relates to a lighting system () comprising a lighting device () for emitting light in a high-power mode and for providing a further function like a sensing function in a low-power mode and a switch () connecting the lighting device with a power supply (). The switch is switchable between a high-power state, in which a higher power is provided to the lighting device via the switch, which allows the lighting device to emit the light in the high-power mode, and which may be regarded as being an ON state, and a low-power state, in which a lower power is provided to the lighting device via the switch, which allows the lighting device to provide the further function, and which may be regarded as being an OFF state. Thus, for instance, a sensing function can be provided, even if the switch is in its OFF state.

A record carrier () has a servo track () indicating an information track () intended for recording information blocks represented by marks. The servo track () has a periodic variation of a physical parameter at a predetermined frequency and modulated parts for encoding position information at regular intervals. The modulated parts start with a bit sync element and are of a data type having a data bit element or of a word sync type having a word sync element. The bit sync element and the data bit element are modulated according to a same predetermined type of modulation of the periodic variation. The modulated parts further include modulated parts () of an isolated bit sync type only having the bit sync element.

Record carrier having an improved modulated servo track for more reliable synchronization and an apparatus for scanning the record carrier

An optical scanning device () is for scanning with a radiation beam a substantially circular track of an information layer (). The device includes: (i) a radiation source () for providing the radiation beam (), (ii) a lens system () for transforming the radiation beam to a scanning spot () in the information layer, the lens system including a first objective lens assembly () having an optical axis (CC'), (iii) a head rotation unit () for the first objective lens assembly which is rotatable about an axis of rotation (BB&#x2032;), and (iv) first driving means () for rotating the head rotation unit about the axis of rotation. According to the invention, the objective lens assembly is movable substantially in a radial direction with respect to and perpendicular to the axis of rotation.

Optical scanning device

An optical scanning device for scanning an optical record carrier. A high numerical aperture objective lens system includes at least a first lens element ( ) arranged to converge the beam to a certain extent and a second lens element ( ) arranged to converge the beam to a greater extent. The device comprises a spherical aberration compensation optical subsystem including an electro-optical element for altering an optical path length in a spherical aberration generating region, which region is located in the optical path between the first lens element and the location of the record carrier in the device.

A magnetic multilayer device (1) comprising two layers (3, 5) of magnetic material which are separated by an interposed layered structure comprising a resonant-tunneling double-barrier structure (RTDBS) (7). In such a device (1), exchange coupling between the magnetic layers (3, 5) can be modified by subjection of the RTDBS (7) to an electric field. In this way, the configuration of the magnetisations (M.sub.1, M.sub.2) in the magnetic layers (3, 5), and thus the net magnetic flux generated by the device (1), can be electrically adjusted. The device (1) can be applied inter alia in a magnetic recording head.

Magnetic multilayer device having resonant-tunneling double-barrier

An element for use in an electrical circuit includes sub-region (11) and a second sub-region (12), which regions can contain a charge carrier gas (6) at least during operation and are separated from one another by an insulation zone (13). The insulaton zone (13) is locally interrupted by a barrier zone (15) which presents a potential barrier to the charge carriers. The first sub-region (11) is provided with a first connection (21) for deriving the potential from it. The second sub-region (12) is provided with two connections (22, 23) by means of which a current (I) can be passed through the second sub-region (12). The potential of the first sub-region (11) is found to be proportional to at least substantially the square of the current (I) passed through the second sub-region. This renders the element particularly suitable for an electrical circuit in which such a proportionality is desired.
