Embodiments herein relate to systems and methods for identifying a plurality of components of a petroleum sample. Embodiments further relate to determining respective atmospheric equivalent boiling points (AEBPs) for respective ones of the plurality of components. Embodiments further relate to determining a boiling curve for the petroleum sample based on the respective AEBPs. Embodiments further relate to outputting an indication of the boiling curve for the petroleum sample. Other embodiments may be described or claimed.

Determination of petroleum component boiling temperatures

Systems and methods include a computer-implemented method for analyzing petroleum samples. Different boiling curves are received that are calculated for a petroleum sample using different analytical speciation techniques. The boiling curves include: 1) a detailed hydrocarbon analysis (DHA) is used for a speciation of light-end components of the petroleum sample; 2) a comprehensive 2-dimensional (2D) gas chromatography (GCxGC) is used for a speciation of a middle distillates range of the petroleum sample; and 3) a high-resolution mass spectrometry is used for a speciation of heavy-end components of the petroleum sample. A compositional coverage of the different analytical speciation techniques for the petroleum samples is determined using the different boiling curves. Each of the different analytical speciation techniques covers a different boiling range and produces a compositional model modeling a breakdown of components in the petroleum sample by carbon number, aromatic ring family, and heteroatom class.

The invention relates to a method for optimizing layered catalytic processes. This is accomplished by testing various catalysts with a compound found in a feedstock to be tested, to determine the facility of the catalyst in hydrogenating, hydrosulfurizing, or hydrodenitrogenating the molecule, and hence the feedstock. In a preferred embodiment, the Double Bond Equivalence of the feedstock and molecule are determined, and catalysts are pre-selected based upon their known ability to work with materials of this DBE value. In preferred embodiments, the layered catalysts include a demetallization catalyst, used before hydrocracking. In additional preferred embodiments, the test feedstock contains 500 ppmw or less asphaltenes, preferably C-asphaltenes.

A process is described for reducing the total acid number of a refinery feedstock. A refinery feedstock containing naphthenic acids is contacted with an effective amount of solid catalyst that has been pretreated with an aqueous caustic base, for a period of time sufficient to neutralize at least a portion of the naphthenic acids in the feedstock. A process is described for reducing the total acid number of a refinery feedstock. In one embodiment, refinery feedstock containing naphthenic acids is contacted with an effective amount of solid catalyst in the presence of an aqueous caustic base, wherein the caustic base is sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, for a period of time sufficient to neutralize at least a portion of the naphthenic acids in the feedstock. Thereafter, the aqueous phase is separated from the neutralized refinery feedstock. In another embodiment catalyst is pretreated with a caustic base solution and contacted with refinery feedstock to reducing the total acid number.
