A system for displaying three-dimensional landscapes includes a processor and a storage device in communication with the processor. The processor is configured to identify at least one predetermined landscape element in a landscape to be displayed, individually calculate a representation of the at least one predetermined landscape element and cause a display to display the landscape based on the individually calculated representation of the at least one predetermined landscape element and the altitude data.

System for displaying three-dimensional landscapes

A navigation system may display route information that includes a display of the fixtures that are located on or near the route. The fixtures may be selected and inserted into the digital map as graphical objects. The graphical objects may be classified into a class and at least one sub-class. The classification data may be used to select and generate the graphical objects.

Selection and insertion of static elements in digital maps

A terrain modeling system provides a terrain model having variable resolution. The system receives an input terrain made up of raster points. The system identifies raster points that differ in height from an adjacent raster point by a threshold. The system interpolates the identified raster points to calculate one or more B-spline surfaces. The surfaces correspond to a multi-dimensional representation of a physical terrain.

Terrain modeling based on curved surface area

A navigation system is provided that includes a storage unit, a processing unit, and an optical output unit. The storage unit includes a first storage portion for storing type definition data for a plurality of object types, the type definition data defining a graphical representation of an object type in terms of at least one basic geometrical shape. A second storage portion includes object data for a plurality of objects, the object data for an object comprising object type data specifying an object type of the object and object position data specifying an object position of the object. To display an object having a specific object type, the processing unit reads the type definition data of the corresponding object type from the first storage portion and generates graphical representations of the basic geometrical shapes that constitute the object type on the optical output unit.
