An optical pick-up actuator includes a lens holder having tracking and focusing coils which substantially extend in two parallel planes at a side of the lens holder. A magnet system cooperates with the tracking and focusing coils and is arranged separately from the lens holder and extends beyond the planes. The coils are arranged for effecting tilt through cooperation with the magnet system and may be provided at each of two opposite sides of the lens holder.

An apparatus for scanning a track on a record carrier has a head () for providing a beam of radiation and generating at least one sensor signal. The device has a focusing unit for controlling a focusing element to maintain an in-focus position for generating a focused spot on the track. The sensor signal is converted into a displacement signal by a multitude of piecewise converters (), each converter converting a range of the sensor signal values into a position signal, and selection means () for selecting one of the position signals as the displacement signal based on an estimated displacement.

Extended focus control

An apparatus for scanning a track on a record carrier has a head () and front end circuitry () for scanning the track and generating scanning signals. A detection unit () detects anomalies in the scanning signal, for example for adjusting a tracking servo. The detection unit () calculates a mean value of the scanning signal and compares the mean value to a threshold for providing an anomaly detection signal (). Further a classification unit () provides an indication of the type of defect for determining a suitable responsive or corrective action.

A controller () is capable of operating in two possible operative modes, each mode having a corresponding characteristic (). Said characteristics have an overlap in a range of error signal values [TLL&#x2013;TN]. The controller is capable of switching from one mode to another, based on the value of the time-derivative (( ) of the input error signal (e), so that, for a certain input error signal within said range [TLL&#x2013;TN], the controller can be in any of its modes.

An optical device includes a polymer film having first and second surfaces. A first electrode is mapped on the first surface and a second electrode is mapped on the second surface. A deformable optical element is mapped on the first electrode or on the first surface.

An optical head for use in the scanning of a record carrier, the record carrier having data stored on data tracks therein on a plurality of information layers () at a plurality of depths within the record carrier. The optical head comprises: a movable optical element () arranged in an optical path to act upon a first radiation beam () and a second radiation beam () to provide the beams with a different displacement perpendicular to the optical path; and a lens system for focusing said first beam () at a first focal point (A) on a first information layer () of the record carrier and the focusing of the second beam () at a second different focal point (B) on a second information layer (), wherein a spacing, transverse to the data tracks, between said first and second focal points (A, B) is controllable by varying the configuration of the movable optical element.
