A new simple transfection method using an integrated electrowetting nano-injector ('INENI') with controlled dosage delivery and high transfection efficiency is disclosed. The volume of delivery can be controlled via voltage application to an inner and outer electrode integrated into a nano-pipette. With higher voltages, more liquid enters the INENI and with lower voltages liquid is expelled. This method can be used to deliver plasmid DNA directly into the nuclei of cells. The INENI requires only the use of a single probe since both electrodes are integrated into the same nano-pipette. Hence, more space is available, and ergo the INENI offers a simplistic means for direct injection of metered amounts of exogenous material into the confines of a cell cytoplasm and/or nucleus while retaining full cell viability.

Integrated electrowetting nano-injector and aspirator

Disclosed is a lab-on-a-chip platform comprising a microfluidic device sealed with a thin membrane. An analysis probe configured to penetrate the thin membrane to access a sample trapped in the microfluidic device.

Integrated microfluidic platform for selective extraction of single-cell mRNA

Methods of non-destructively obtaining the genotype of a plant cell from a plant sample are disclosed. The plant cell is isolated from a plant cell sample using an integrated microfluidic device. The integrated microfluidic device includes an individual cell trap located downstream from a microfluidic channel and, the microfluidic device is configured to trap the plant cell in the individual cell trap. mRNA is extracted from the plant cell by contacting the plant cell with an atomic force microscope (AFM) probe and by attracting mRNA from loci of interest to the probe end using a dielectrophoresis DEP force under the alternating current (AC) field applied to the probe. The genotype of the plant cell is determined from cDNA obtained from the extracted mRNA. Alternatively, the mRNA is analyzed to determine gene expression patterns of the plant cell.

Methods and devices for non-thermal polymerase chain reaction

An apparatus and method for measuring amplitude and/or phase of a molecular vibration uses a polarization modulated pump beam and a stimulating Stokes beam on a probe of a scanning probe microscope to detect a Raman scattered Stokes beam from the sample. The detected Raman scattered Stokes beam is used to derive at least one of the amplitude and the phase of the molecular vibration.

Methods and devices for non-therman polymerase chain reaction

An atomic force microscope based apparatus and method for detecting Raman effect on a sample of interest utilizes first and second electromagnetic sources to emit first electromagnetic radiation of frequency Vi and second electromagnetic radiation of frequency V2 onto a probe tip, which is coupled to a structure that can oscillate the probe tip. The frequency Vi and the frequency v2 are selected to induce Raman effect on a sample engaged by the probe tip that results in Raman force interactions between the probe tip and the sample. Oscillations of the probe tip due to the Raman force interactions are then measured.

Mechanical detection of Raman resonance

A new method in microscopy is provided which extends the domain of AFM's to nanoscale spectroscopy. Molecular resonance of nanometer features can be detected and imaged purely by mechanical detection of the force gradient between the interaction of the optically driven molecular dipole/multipole and its mirror image in a Platinum coated scanning probe tip. The method is extendable to obtain nanoscale spectroscopic information ranging from infrared to UV and RF.

Image force microscopy of molecular resonance

An electronically scannable multiplexing device is capable of addressing multiple bits within a volatile or non-volatile memory cell. The multiplexing device generates an electronically scannable conducting channel with two oppositely formed depletion regions. The depletion width of each depletion region is controlled by a voltage applied to a respective control gate at each end of the multiplexing device. The present multi-bit addressing technique allows, for example, 10 to 100 bits of data to be accessed or addressed at a single node. The present invention can also be used to build a programmable nanoscale logic array or for randomly accessing a nanoscale sensor array.

Electronically scannable multiplexing device

A trench structure and an integrated circuit comprising sub-lithographic trench structures in a substrate. In one embodiment the trench structure is created by forming sets of trenches with a lithographic mask and filling the sets of trenches with sets of step spacer blocks comprising two alternating spacer materials which are separately removable from each other. In one embodiment, the trench structures formed are one-nth the thickness of the lithographic mask's feature size. The size of the trench structures being dependent on the thickness and number of spacer material layers used to form the set of step spacer blocks. The number of spacer material layers being n/2 and the thickness of each spacer material layer being one-nth of the lithographic mask's feature size.

Sub-lithographic printing method

A memory cell (and method of fabricating the memory cell) includes a stencil layer having a first opening, a phase-change material layer formed on a first electrode layer, and an electrically conductive layer formed on the first electrode layer, the electrically conductive layer having a pillar-shaped portion which is formed on the phase-change material layer and fills the first opening.
