An air filter ( ) for an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle designed to transmit sound into the passenger compartment or driver area in order to inform the driver of the operating state of the engine. The air filter includes an air filter housing ( ), a filter insert ( ), an air inlet ( ) for unfiltered air, and an air outlet ( ) for filtered air. The air filter housing ( ) includes a housing wall ( ) in or on which at least one membrane ( ) is mounted. The membrane ( ) is made of a material which is more permeable to sound than the rest of the housing wall ( ), so that the shape and position of the membrane can be used to achieve a desired sound generation and distribution.

Sound transmitting air filter

A duct or conduit section ( ) for installation, in particular, in an air intake system of an internal combustion engine, in which the duct section is composed of two shells ( ) which are joined by a snap connection ( ). Openings located in the parting seam or joint ( ) between the shells ( ) are produced by recesses in the half shells. These openings each have a cross-sectional area of less than 7 mm and are useful for suppressing noise resulting from the air intake. As a result of the openings, vibration-inducing forces exerted on adjacent components in the engine compartment due to pulsations in the intake tube, can be minimized or avoided. Also, the quantity of additional air drawn in from the engine compartment, which is undesired because it is too warm, is decreased.

A duct system with a throttle valve, particularly useful as an air intake duct for an internal combustion engine, in which the throttle valve is configured in such a way that in the closed position it covers only a partial region of the cross-sectional area of the duct which is to be throttled and leaves another partial region open so that air can continue to flow through the intake duct. This condition is suitable, particularly at low engine rotational speeds, to dampen the air intake noise of the internal combustion engine. When the throttle valve is positioned perpendicular to the direction of air flow through the duct, sound waves in the air intake duct of the internal combustion engine are reflected back toward the engine, and in this way an economical possibility for influencing the air intake noise results which also can be utilized to design a desired noise profile for the engine.

Duct system with throttle valve

An intake system which can be used for cooling a battery in a motor vehicle. This intake system has a raw air inlet , a raw air duct , a filter housing , a filter element , a clean air outlet , a clean air duct and an intake air manifold . The filter element is placed in the filter housing such that the air which flows from the raw air inlet through the raw air duct into the filter housing , must pass through the filter element before it reaches the clean air duct to the intake air manifold . The filter element also has a curvature by which it at least partially follows the contour of a battery box wall of an adjacent battery box . The filter element can be made curved or in multiple parts.

Intake system

An air induction device ( ) for an internal combustion engine including an air filter housing ( ) with an open induction tube ( ) leading away from it and a supplementary induction tube ( ) having a closing element, preferably in the area of its end opening ( ). The closing element may take the form of a rotary flap ( ) and is actuated depending on engine speed. The housing ( ) and the induction tubes ( ) are configured in geometrical terms in such a way that at low engine rotational speeds, the housing ( ) and the open induction tube ( ) form a Helmholtz resonator, while the closed supplementary induction tube ( ) forms a quarter-wave tube leading from the housing ( ). At higher engine rotational speeds, the supplementary induction tube ( ) is opened, and the overall length of the supplementary induction tube ( ) is adapted so that at the higher speeds, it forms a Helmholtz resonator with the air filter housing ( ) and the open induction tube ( ).

Air induction system for internal combustion engine

An intake assembly with an optimal noise level, especially an intake duct for use as the manifold of an internal combustion engine. The noise level is optimized by introducing shunt resonators (,) in collecting manifold of the intake duct, which is produced using a multi-shell technique. The inserted structures (,) can be adhered or welded before the shells are joined, or they can be inserted in a preexisting duct formed of previously joined half shells. The shunt resonators (,) require little space and can also be used for subsequently optimizing the intake ducts in the test phase, if the initial test results are acoustically unsatisfactory.

A tube, particularly suitable for use as a part of the intake manifold of an internal-combustion engine, having an inside diameter which can be changed as a function of the operating condition of the internal-combustion engine.

Tube with variable inside diameter

An intake air temperature control device for mixture-compressing internal combustion engines having an inlet flapper proportioning the flows of cold and preheated raw air into a duct junction and into raw air mixing duct, the flapper-adjusting wax thermostat being arranged inside a thermostat chamber into which branch flows of cold and preheated raw air are admitted through two calibrated branch inlets. A narrow annular gap through which the combined branch flows must pass assures an integrated response of the thermostat to changing temperatures and air intake speeds. A lost-motion drive connection and a biasing member produce a full-load correction of the adjusted temperature. The flapper drive members may have valve edges which cooperate with the calibrated branch inlets to open and close the latter.
