An apparatus for the application of adhesive coated slips to a moving web or to workpieces being conveyed, and preferably to the drawn up and still open bottoms of bags, consists of pairs of feed rolls for a web of material and means for perforating and tearing off, or means for detaching, the slips from the web of material and of a transfer folding gripper cylinder for receiving and subsequent transfer of the slips or pieces of tube. In order to be able to apply additional slips between an applying folding gripper cylinder (9) for the application of the slips and the transfer folding cylinder (6) there is an intermediate cylinder (7), which with the applying folding cylinder (9) defines a roll nip, into which slips run, which are torn off or otherwise detached along lines of perforations from a second web (10) of material are inserted, and which transfers the slips or pieces of tube which are torn off or otherwise detached from the first and the second web of material in an at least partly overlapping condition to the web or, respectively, workpieces (12) passing through the device.

Apparatus for severing bags from a two-ply web of thermoplastic material. The apparatus includes web guide rollers defining a nip, and a plurality of peripheral grooves in the guide rollers in which upper and lower air directing tubes are positioned to guide a web as it passes downstream of the feed rollers. A continuously transversely moving severing knife is provided downstream of the feed rollers and below the plane defined by the moving web. A pair of welding jaws are provided adjacent the cutting knife to grip the web in a plane below the web movement plane to weld the plies of the web together and to deflect the web into position for providing a transverse cut therein by means of the severing knife. A pivot lever is provided to pivot downstream ends of the lower air directing tubes in a downward direction to prevent interference between the downwardly deflected web and the downstream ends of the air directing tubes. A set of clamping jaws is provided on the opposite side of the severing knife from the welding jaws in order to securely hold the web during the cutting operation.

The apparatus includes a conveyor belt, and a carriage that is movable in a conveying direction, the carriage including a belt clamping device to clamp the carriage to the belt, the carriage including a bag stack clamping device for clamping a stack of bags to the belt. Movement of the carriage simultaneously moves the conveyor belt and a stack of bags in the conveying direction, whereupon the belt clamp and the bag clamp are released, and the carriage is returned to the bag stacking station.

During long-term stoppages the glue applicators are pivoted beyond the first rest position to a second rest position at which the nozzles are in communication with a drain channel and purge fluid is sent through the applicator to pass through the nozzles and carry the glue and purge fluid to a collecting container, so that the nozzles are clear for subsequent start-up of the glue-applying operation.

A stacking, severing and block-forming machine for sheet articles such as flattened plastics bags comprises a stacking station at which the articles are superposed against a displaceable abutment, a mechanism for compressing each stack, a conveyor mechanism for taking each stack to a severing and block-forming station when the abutment has been displaced and a heatable knife for cutting through the stack and simultaneously interconnecting the cut edges of the articles to form blocks. The compressing mechanism is at a stationary location downstream of the stacking station and the knife is displaceable in the upstream direction during cutting.

The apparatus is intended for use in conjunction with a rotary feeder having a stack magazine which contains packs of tube sections. The apparatus comprises pressure applying means acting on the tube sections, particularly in the form of laterally pivotally movable pressure-applying fingers, which bear on the uppermost pack of tube sections and are adapted to descend as the stack decreases in height. Actuating means are provided, which when the pressure-applying fingers have reached a position in which they are at a minimum distance from the suction rollers of the rotary feeder impart an outward pivotal movement to said pressure-applying fingers, raise them to an extent which corresponds to the height of the subsequently supplied pack or packs of tube sections, and cause the pressure-applying fingers to bear on said pack or packs. The pressure-applying fingers are removed from the stack in the plane of the tube sections upon which they press.
