Alkanes substituted by chlorine atoms and/or sulfochloride groups are prepared by reacting alkanes with chlorine, with or without sulfur dioxide, in a particular throughput ratio, in a reaction chamber inclined to the horizontal, the starting materials being passed through the reaction chamber in co-current, from below. The substituted alkanes or paraffins obtainable by the process of the invention are pesticides, plasticizers, solvents and starting materials for the preparation of such products, as well as of fat liquors, detergents, lubricating oils, synthetic resins and slip agents.

Manufacture of N-arylglycinonitriles by reacting N-arylamines with carbonyl compounds and hydrogen cyanide under specific reaction conditions in respect of the temperature, reaction time and hydrogen cyanide concentration. The N-arylglycinonitriles obtainable by the process of the invention are antioxidants and valuable starting materials for the manufacture of dyes, fungicides, bactericides, textile assistants and as inhibitors for use in antifreezes.

Manufacture of N-arylglycinonitriles

Manufacture of glycinonitriles by reacting amines with carbonyl compounds and hydrogen cyanide under specific reaction conditions in respect of the temperature, reaction time and hydrogen cyanide concentration. The glycinonitriles obtainable by the process of the invention are antioxidants and valuable starting materials for the manufacture of dyes, fungicides, bactericides, textile auxiliaries and inhibitors for use in antifreezes.

Manufacture of glycinonitriles

N-Alkylglycinonitriles are manufactured by reacting N-alkylamines with formaldehyde and hydrocyanic acid under specific reaction conditions in respect of temperature, reaction time and hydrocyanic acid concentration. The products are starting materials for the manufacture of dyes, fungicides, bactericides, textile assistants and assistants used in dental cosmetics, gas purification and waterproofing.

Manufacture of N-substituted glycinonitriles

The new 1-monochloro- and 1,1-dichloro-prop-2,3-ene-3-sulfonic acids and their metal salts, and a process for their manufacture by reacting chloropropanesulfonic acid compounds with alkali metal carbonates, alkali metal bicarbonates and/or alkaline earth metal hydroxides at from 5.degree. to 100.degree. C to give 1-chloro-prop-2,3-ene-3-sulfonates which may then be reacted with acid compounds in a second step. The products are starting materials for the manufacture of pesticides, plasticizers, solvents, leather greases, detergents, lubricating oils, synthetic resins and slip agents. They are also assistants in electroplating processes and starting materials for the manufacture of such assistants.
