An optical transmission element that has an oil-containing filling compound and inside is provided with a two-layer outside sheath. The inside layer of the sheath is composed of a polyolefin and the outside layer is composed of a polyester, particularly of a polycarbonate. The shrinkage and swelling of the inside layer is largely compensated by the hard outside layer and the swelling portion, which usually appear at higher temperature, are kept extremely low.

An improved method of manufacturing a light waveguide cable having a light waveguide bundle of at least one lead with the filling material received in an outer sheath characterized by the method including applying an outer sheath on the bundle with the filling material, said sheath being of a material at least partially light permeable and cross-linking the filling material by irradiating the sheath with light radiation, such as ultraviolet light, which will pass through the sheath to cross-link the filling material.

Method for manufacturing a light waveguide cable

A filling compound for a light waveguide lead and/or light waveguide cable. The filling compound comprises polypropylene glycol and a second constituent chosen from the group consisting of: finely distributed fumed silica; aluminum oxide; aluminum hydroxide; a halogen containing organic compound; and mixtures thereof. Preferably, the polypropylene glycol comprises 50 to 99 weight percent of the filling compound, and the second constituent comprises 1 to about 50 weight percent.

Filling compound for light waveguide leads and/or light waveguide cables

A light waveguide is protected with a protective covering loosely surrounding the waveguide, which covering is constructed of an inside layer and an outside layer. The inside layer is composed of a material selected from a group consisting of polycarbonate, polyether sulfone and polyetherimide while the outside layer is composed of a material selected from a group consisting of polyester, polyether, polyurethane, copolymers of these polymers as well as block polymers of each of these polymers. The selection of these materials with the two layers provides a good connection between the two layers of the covering.

Protective covering for at least one light waveguide

Longitudinally water-tight cables, such as communication cables, are produced so that the interior of such cables have a filling material containing a water-repellant substance and relatively small diameter gas bubbles embedded in the filling material. The filling material is thickened with a reticulating thixotropic substance having a 3-dimensional network-like structure which is disruptable under mechanical influence and is regenerable over a time span in a motionless state with a significant increase of viscosity. The size of the gas bubbles are adjusted relative to the resistance to disruption of the network-like structure so that the buoyancy of such gas bubbles is significantly below such resistance to disruption in the motionless state of the filling material whereby such gas bubbles are maintained in their respective positions within the filling material in a time-stable manner during a motionless state.

Longitudinally water-tight cables

Longitudinally water-tight cables, such as communication cables, are produced so that the interior of such cables contain a filling material which includes a water-repelling substance and relatively small diameter gas bubbles substantially uniformly embedded therein. The filling material contains an admixture of thermoplastic rubbers or rubber-like thermoplastic materials which are molten at the processing temperature utilized in the course of cable filling and which soldify at the normal operating temperature range of a cable by linking, hooking or coupling via thermoplastic blocks having a correspondingly low melting range, that is lying just below the cable filling temperature. The gas bubbles, which are generated during cable filling, are maintained at their respective spatial positions within the filling material by a rubber-like network which forms in the filling material and the linking or joining points in such network can withstand the buoyancy forces of the gas bubbles without rupture.

Longitudinally water-tight cables and method of producing the same

The invention relates to a cable, particularly to a light waveguide cable, in which at least one conductor, particularly a fiber-shaped light waveguide, is arranged in the interior of a protective sheathing and the remaining inside space is filled out with a gel-like substance.
