The present invention provides compounds having the formula: in which R is hydrogen, hydroxy, halogen, C-C-alkyl, C-Ccycloalkyl, C-Calkenyl, C-Calkynyl, C-C-alkoxy, C-Ccycloalkoxy, C-Calkenoxy, C-Calkynoxy or C-Caralkyl; Rand R, independently, are hydrogen, C-Calkyl, C-Ccycloalkyl, C-Caralkyl, &#x2014;C(&#x2550;O)&#x2014;R(in which Ris C-Calkyl, C-Calkyl interrupted by 1 to 6 oxygen atoms, hetero-substituted C-Calkyl, C-Ccycloalkyl, C-Calkenyl, C-Calkynyl, C-C-alkoxy, C-Ccycloalkoxy, C-Calkenoxy, C-Calkynoxy, C-Caryl, C-Caryloxy or C-Caralkyl), or &#x2014;C(&#x2550;O)&#x2014;NH&#x2014;Rin which Rhas its previous significance; and Ris hydrogen, halogen, hydroxy, C-Calkyl, C-Ccycloalkyl, C-Calkenyl, C-Calkynyl, C-C-alkoxy, C-Ccycloalkoxy, C-Calkenoxy, C-Calkynoxy, phenyl, C-Caralkyl or &#x2014;N(R)(R) in which Rand Rhave their previous significance, or Rand Rtogether form a C-Cmembered ring. The new triphenyltriazine compounds have improved absorption spectrum characteristics and superior resistance to exposure to UV light, relative to known triphenyltriazine compounds.

Disclosed is sun screen formulation, comprising (a) a micronised organic UV absorber, and (b) a cosmetically acceptable carrier, wherein the micronised organic UV absorber is present in the oil phase of the formulation. The compounds used according to this invention are very powerful UVA absorbers with fractions in the UVB range and are particularly suitable as sunscreens in cosmetic, pharmaceutical and veterinary compositions.

Cosmetic use of Bis(resorcinyl)triazine derivatives

A description is given of symmetrical triazine derivatives of formula (1), wherein R,and R,are each independently of the other hydrogen; C,-C,alkyl, C,-C,alkoxy; and R,is C,-C,alkyl; or C,-C,alkoxy. The easily accessible triazine derivatives are suitable for protecting ultraviolet-sensitive materials, in particular skin and hair of humans and animals, from the harmful effects of UV radiation.
