The invention concerns a cored wire comprising a metal tube and a filling of magnesium or other pyrophoric metals passivated with from 0.5 to 5% by weight of organic nitrogen compounds. As the passivating agent, compounds from the series of the s-triazine and/or guanidine derivatives, preferably from 2 to 5% by weight of dicyandiamide, applied by means of an adhesion promoter, are preferred. The wires used in accordance with the invention serve to produce cast iron with spheroidal and vermicular graphite, to desulphurize pig iron melts or to produce metal alloys.

The present invention provides a process for the passivation of pyrophoric metals and especially of magnesium by coating with a passivation agent, wherein, as passivation agent, there is used 0.5 to 5% by weight of an s-triazine derivative and/or a guanidine, referred to the weight of the metal. The present invention also provides a passivated pyrophoric metal, wherein the metal particles are coated with 0.5 to 5% by weight of an s-triazine derivative and/or guanidine or a guanidine derivative, referred to the weight of the metal.

Passivation of pyrophoric metals

The present invention provides an agent for desulphurizing iron containing calcium carbide and a metallic component, wherein the calcium carbide and the metallic component are present in such a form that the bulk densities and grain sizes thereof lie in the same range. The present invention also provides a process for producing this agent, as well as a process for desulphurizing iron using this agent.
