A process for increasing the carbohydrate accumulation in plants by application of compounds of the class of phenoxyphenoxy-, pyridyloxy-, benzoxazolyloxy-, benzothiazolyloxy-, quinolinyloxy-, quinazolinyloxy-phenoxypropionic acid derivatives or cyclohexanedione derivatives.

Compounds of formula ##STR1## wherein R is halogen, CF.sub.3, NO.sub.2, CN, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)-alkoxy, n is zero or 1, X is O, S, NH, or N-(C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl, Y is O or S, R.sup.1 is H or (C.sub.1 -C.sub.4)alkyl and Z is, among others, a cyanalkyl, (subst.) carbalkoxyalkyl, (subst.) carbalkoxyphenyl, sulfoxyalkyl or oxime group, are selective herbicides active especially against weed grasses.

Benzoxazolyloxy phenoxy esters and use as monocotyledonous weed grass

Compounds of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents hydroxyl, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.10)alkoxy, (C.sub.1 -C.sub.6)alkylthio, (C.sub.2 -C.sub.4)alkenyloxy, cyclohexyloxy, cyclopentyloxy, phenoxy or phenylthio both optionally substituted once or twice with halogen, benzyloxy, benzylthio or -O-cat in which 'cat' stands for the cation of an inorganic or organic base, have a very good effect on wild oat, barnyard grass, bristle grass and rayegrass in a much lower concentration than known analogous compounds.

Herbicidal compounds

Herbicidal agents containing as active ingredient a compound of the formula ##STR1## in which R represents halogen, C.sub.1 -C.sub.4 -alkyl, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkoxy or C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -alkylthio, C.sub.1 -C.sub.2 -halogeno-alkyl, NO.sub.2 SO.sub.2 CH.sub.3, SO.sub.2 NH.sub.2, --COOCH.sub.3, CN, with the proviso that R.sub.2 cannot be alkoxy when (R).sub.n is alkyl, R.sub.1 and R.sub.3 represent C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, R.sub.2 represents C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkyl, CH.sub.2 Cl or C.sub.1 -C.sub.6 -alkoxy, X is oxygen or sulfur and n is an integer of from 1 to 3 are especially useful for combatting annual weed grasses in dicotyledonous and even monocotyledonous crop plants.

Herbicidal agents

Phenoxyphenoxy-propionic acid derivatives of the formula ##STR1## exhibit an outstanding herbicidal activity against a wide variety of weed grasses and are well tolerated by dicotyledonous crop plants and various cereals.
