A process for making a filter suitable for filtering molten metal comprising (i) forming a slurry comprising (a) particles of a refractory material, (b) a binder and (c) a liquid carrier, (ii) coating a disposable former with a slurry, (iii) drying the coated former, (iv) optionally applying one or more additional coats of a refractory material and/or a binder, optionally with liquid carrier, and drying the one or more additional coats, and (v) firing the coated former to produce the filter, wherein the binder is a carbon rich source selected from one or more of the following classes of materials: pitches, tars and organic polymers that degrade to form carbon on pyrolysis.

Refractory articles

A filter for molten metal is an open-pored porous material comprising particles of refractory material embedded in and bonded together by a carbon matrix bonding material. The filter can be made by forming a porous article from refractory particles, e.g. refractory oxide, carbide or graphite, and a carbon-rich binder, e.g. tar, pitch or an organic (preferably aromatic) polymer that degrades to form carbon on pyrolysis, and then firing the porous article to generate the carbon matrix in which the refractory particles are embedded. The porous article is preferably made by coating a reticulated polyurethane foam with binder and refractory particles, and firing at preferably no higher than 800&#xb0; C.

The disclosed invention relates to the field of ceramics and concerns an open-cell expanded ceramic which may be used in the form of a deep-bed filter, and a process for the production thereof. The primary object is to produce an open-cell expanded ceramic by a simple and economical process. This object is attained by an open-cell expanded ceramic in which the inner cavities, cracks and the porosity of the ceramic members are filled partially or completely by one or a plurality of metal and/or ceramic phases and/or glass phases. The open-cell expanded ceramic is also produced in that during or after sintering the cavities, cracks and the porosity of the ceramic members are partially or completely filled with a melt or a suspension which melt below the melting temperature of the expanded ceramic, have a coefficient of expansion similar to the coefficient of expansion of the expanded ceramic, and a very good wetting capacity, and only react partially or not at all with constituents of the expanded ceramic.

A hot metal car is used for the transport of molten pig iron from a blast furnace to a steel making plant, the car having an opening through which it is filled and emptied. To restrict heat loss from the car, the opening is closed during at least one of (a) the journey from the blast furnace station to the steel making plant and (b) the journey from the steel making plant back to the blast furnace by a disposable cover which is at least partly lost into the molten iron during the course of the emptying or filling of the car at the end of the journey concerned.

The apparatus permits protection of the part of an electrode between the electrode clamp and the furnace roof without removing the electrode from the roof.

Protection of graphite electrodes

Matter for protecting graphite electrodes of electric arc furnaces, e.g. for steelmaking, to reduce loss of graphite by oxidation, comprises particles containing both a graphite-wetting fusible matrix material and a refractory filler. Methods of making and using the particulate matter are disclosed.

Injectable composition for desulphurizing molten ferrous metals, especially iron, comprises alkaline earth metal, preferably magnesium, and sintered mixture of lime and at least one fluxing agent. Magnesium is preferably 8 to 60% of composition and lime preferably is 45 to 95% of the sintered mixture. Fluxing agent is preferably alumina and fluoride. Composition enables rapid and efficient desulphurization and does not give large amounts of slag.
