Sacks which are open on one side and which are preferably provided with side folds are gripped at their side sections in the area of their opening edges by pairs of grippers. The grippers can be displaced towards and away from each other. The lateral walls of the sacks are pulled apart in the area of the opening edges between the grippers by suction elements arranged on a rack. In the rack there are arranged filling necks which are lowerable into the open sacks. A sealing device closes the open edges of the sacks which are pulled taut by moving apart the grippers so that the open edges are laid on each other as a result thereof. In order to be able to detect the desired net weight of the filling quantity with high accuracy, the pairs of grippers and the drive for the opening and closing movements thereof and for the displacement of the grippers towards and away from each other are arranged on a frame which are connected with the rack by weighing devices.

Apparatus for filling unilaterally open sacks

An apparatus is disclosed for making bags or sacks from a continuous tubular film of thermoplastic material. The continuous tubular film is moved intermittently in a downward direction to a welding device, a cutter below the welding device, and a turret-like rotary conveyor below the cutter. A bag length is received by grippers on the rotary conveyor before it is welded and cut. When thus received the bag length is welded and cut, and the conveyor indexed by one step to present succeeding grippers to the tube. The tube is then advanced another bag length so that the succeeding bag is received in the succeeding pair of grippers. The process is repeated with succeeding bags. The bags on the conveyor are successively delivered to a transfer station where the grippers are opened to release the bags.

Apparatus for making bags or sacks from a preferably gusseted continuous

An apparatus for filling and closing sacks has a pair of grippers for gripping the lateral portions of the sacks adjacent to their opening-defining edges, the grippers of each pair are movable toward and away from each other, also a pair of suction cups for pulling the side walls of the sacks apart adjacent to the opening-defining edges between the grippers, a filling pipe, which is adapted to be lowered into and to be lifted out of the opened sacks, and a welding device for forming a transverse seam weld to close the opening-defining edges when they have been pulled taut by a movement of the grippers away from each other. A transfer conveyor is provided for conveying freely suspended sacks into the region below the filling pipe, pivoted arms are connected to a turning drive carry the grippers and serve to take over the sacks in a position in which the sacks are substantially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the filling pipe, the turning drive pivotally moves the filled sacks in the feeding direction beyond the filling pipe into the welding station and deposits the sacks on a support in the welding station. In the welding station opening-defining edge portions are provided by the welding jaws of the welding device with a transverse seam weld closing the sacks, and the turning drive subsequently imparts to the pivoted arms a pivotal movement to their filling position below the filling pipe so that they can take over and hold the next sack.

Apparatus for filling and closing sacks which are open at one end

Apparatus for aligning a sack disposed at the leading end of a series of shingled sacks, which have been unwound from a roll of shingled sacks and which have openings at their leading ends. The sack is aligned by transversely spaced gripping rollers that are operable to align the leading edge of a sack for proper orientation prior to transfer of the sack to a filling apparatus. An intermittently driven conveyor belt conveys the unwound series of shingled sacks as they are unwound from a roll. At least one pressure-applying roller is disposed above the conveyor belt and acts on the leading sack of the series of shingled sacks and cooperates with a backing roller, which is adapted to be driven, and optional pressure-applying elements, which are adapted to be lowered onto the next following sack.

Apparatus for aligning an opening of a sack

This invention relates to apparatus for infolding laterally protruding wings of a filled sack onto adhesive strips provided on the top of the sack. Said wings have been formed when the top end portion of the sack has been stretched flat and has been closed by a seam weld and has been folded down onto one half of the flattened top surface of the sack. Two folding bars or folding rods are movably mounted in a machine frame and protrude freely in the direction in which the sacks are conveyed. Said folding bars or rods are adapted to be lowered onto and raised from the top surface of each sack and have outer edges defining fold lines for the wings to be infolded. Holders are mounted in the machine frame on both sides of the sack standing upright on a support. Each of said holders carries a holder frame provided with a gripper arm for engaging one of the wings from below. An upper gripper arm for cooperating with the lower gripper arm is pivoted in each of said holder frames. The holders are movable between an outer portion, in which the ends of the gripper arms are disposed laterally of and above the sack, and an inner position, in which the lower gripper arms force the infolded wings onto the adhesive strips.

Apparatus for closing filled sacks, preferably large sacks, which consist at least in part of thermoplastic material, comprises a feeder for feeding the filled sacks into a closing station. The feeder preferably comprises a roller conveyor or a belt conveyor. The apparatus also comprises means for holding the top end portion the sack above the contents of the sack, pressure-applying bars, which are parallel to each other and adapted to be lowered onto the contents of the sack on both sides of the sack end portion, which is held taut, which pressure-applying bars when in a lower position define between them a gap for the passage of the sack between said bars, and closing means provided above the pressure-applying bars. The closing means comprise welding bars and backing bars, which engage the sack end portion between the end-holding means and the pressure-applying bars and are disposed on opposite sides of said sack end portion. That of the pressure-applying bars which is disposed on the trailing side of the sack is provided with adhesive discharge nozzles directed toward the upper wall portion of the sack in contact with the contents of the sack, and that of said pressure-applying bars which is disposed on the leading side of the sack comprises a folding edge or folding rod, which faces the end of the sack. When the end seam weld has been formed and the welding and backing bars have released the sack and the conveyor has subsequently been restarted said folding edge or folding rod causes the end portion of the sack to be folded down onto and forced against the flattened upper portion of the trailing wall of the sack.

Apparatus for closing filled sacks

For automatically suspending large sacks successively from a filling device, each flattened sack is folded at least once onto itself. Every sack is in turn brought up to stops on a table and scanned for alignment by photocells. The mouth of the sack is pulled open by suckers, transferred to gripper mechanisms which are carried by swing arms and provided with hinged grippers co-operating with wedges inserted in the open mouth, and the sack is then swung from the table to the filling device where it is pushed onto a funnel.

Method and apparatus for suspending large sacks from the filling funnel

A piston-cylinder unit causes a web of closure tape material to be withdrawn from a supply reel in steps equal to the width of each closure tape required for closing the folded-over flattened mouth end of a large sack. Each tape is severed from the leading web end by a knife and engaged by a suction bar which is swung together with two welding bars onto an inclined support for the folded-over mouth end.

The mouth end of a large filled sack is held taut and flat by holding means. Parallel folding bars extend downwardly from carriers like the prongs of a comb at both sides of the flattened mouth end. The carriers can be moved towards and away from each other, and raised and lowered, so that the folding bars gather or ruffle the mouth end to form a frill and are then withdrawn.

Apparatus for gathering the flattened filling ends of filled large sacks

Preparatory to closing a filled upright sack by a zig-zag closure, grippers engage the flattened mouth end of the sack. A support is swung to a position adjacent the flattened end and swing arms cause the end to be folded onto the support. After rollers have been swung onto backing rollers to clamp the folded-over end, the grippers are opened and withdrawn by the swing arms.

Apparatus for laterally turning over the flattened filling end of filled

In a method of automatically closing a large upright sack after filling, the top of the flattened filling end of the sack is folded over onto itself and a closure tape is secured to the folded-over portion and one wall of the sack, whereafter the filling end is re-erected substantially vertically, folded in zig-zag fashion and pulled together to form a frill. The ends of the tape project beyond both sides of the filling end so that, after zig-zag folding of the filling end and tape and after the frill has been formed, the tape ends project from the same side of the frill and can be interconnected.
