The present invention concerns a bioactive implant material having a cartilage-inducing and/or bone-inducing activity composed of two components A and B, of which A is a bone-inducing and/or cartilage-inducing protein or protein mixture and preferably one or several proteins from the TGF-&#x3b2; superfamily, preferably MP52 or a DNA sequence coding therefor and B is a carrier matrix composed of calcium phosphate ceramics with an interconnecting microporosity which already alone has bone-inducing properties. The invention additionally concerns the production of these compounds and their use for the treatment of diseases which affect cartilage and/or bones as well as to treat damage to cartilage and/or bone tissue.

A gas generator for air bags is provided which includes a first outer shell and a second outer shell, each having a circular part and an outer wall formed along the outer periphery of the circular part. A gas generating device is installed in the hollow portion formed within the outer shells. Openings for communicating the hollow portion with an air bag are provided. A plurality of concentric wall members axially extending from the circular part of the first outer shell and a plurality of concentric wall members axially extending from the circular part of the second outer shell, located at positions corresponding to the outer wall members of the first outer shell define circumferential chambers within the gas generator. Gaps are formed between terminal end surfaces of opposing outer wall members whereby gases produced by the gas generating device on receiving impacts flow through the generator and are introduced into the air bag to protect a passenger from impacts.

The present invention provides a gas generator for air bags that includes a first shell having a circular part and an outer wall. The outer wall formed is of a porous material which allows gas to pass freely therethrough. A second shell is attached to the first shell to form a housing into which is installed a gas generating device. The gas generating device includes a canister filled with a gas generant. A plurality of first and second blade members fasten the first and second shells together. The blade members are at least equal in height to the total height of the housing, the first blade members being shaped to fit the outer circumferential surface of the canister and placed in contact with the outer circumferential surface of the canister and arranged along the circumference of the canister at periodic intervals to form a ring. The second blade members have a width at least equal to the circumferential interval between the first blade members and are spaced radially from the first blade members and shifted in the circumferential direction from the first blade members to positions facing the intervals between the first blade members. The first and second blade members have projections that extend through apertures formed in the first and second shells. The projections engage the outer surfaces of the shells to fasten the shells together. Gases produced by the gas generating device on receiving impacts are delivered past the blade members and introduced, through the outer wall of the first shell, into the air bag to protect a passenger from the impacts.

An implantable drug depot for the treatment of diseases of the bone or bone marrow. The depot consisting of a matrix in which at least one active ingredient is incorporated and contains at least one adjuvant agent to control the kinetics of the drug release. The matrix material consists of resorbable sintered calcium phosphate composed of CaO and P.sub.2 O.sub.5 in a ratio between 5:1 and 2:1.

Implantable drug depot and process for the production thereof

An implantable bone replacement material (body) based on completely or partially resorbable particles incorporated in a matrix material. The particles are composed of bioactive sintered calcium phosphate ceramic material having a CaO:P.sub.2 O.sub.5 composition ratio between 3:1 and 4:1. The replacement material (body) consists of a metal containing calcium phosphate ceramic material in the form of a monolayer of particles in the peripheral areas of the material (body) which serve as interfaces to the body tissue. The metal is compatible with body tissue. The ceramic particles have a size range between about 500 .mu.m and a few millimeters. The calcium phosphate particles are located so that they lie exposed on the upper surface of the material (body). Other embodiments and processes are also disclosed.

Implantable bone replacement materials based on calcium phosphate

An implantable prosthesis anchorage which contains a non-porous outer coating in the regions which is positioned in contact with bone. The non-porous outer coating consists of (i) at least one bioactive resorbable ceramic material which is a calcium phosphate and (ii) at least one polymer which is mechanically and chemically stable in the body. The ceramic material is in particulate form having particle diameters between 0.5 and 1 mm. The ceramic material particles is incorporated in the polymer in such a way that resorption of the ceramic material leads to a polymer structure with continuous pores filled with living bone tissue. Bioactivating bonding residues of the ceramic material are left on the inner surfaces of the filled pores which were created by the resorption of the ceramic material.

Bone replacement or prosthesis anchoring material on the basis of sintered calcium phosphates which consists of a mixture of calcium phosphates with low or high-molecular-weight organic substances. More specifically, the anchoring material consists of a mixture of calcium phosphates composed of CaO and P.sub.2 O.sub.5 in a quantitative ratio of 2:1 to 4:1 with biodegradable polymers in a ratio of 10:1 to 1:1 of phosphate to polymer and is implantable as a solid body. An artificial tooth with an implantable root adapted to permanently grow together with the jawbone and, also under high mechanical loads as is the case for natural teeth, will not allow for the production of a rejection or repelling reaction between the natural bone and the implant. The tooth root is essentially constituted of a biostable polymer matrix which is compatible with human tissue, in which there is introduced reabsorbable bioreactive calcium phospate in a finely dispersed form, which is encompassed by a thin porous layer of non-reabsorbable calcium phospate, and into which there is inserted a core as a connecting member for the mounting of a dental superstructure in the form of a tooth crown, a fastening element for dental bridges or the like. In the region of the tooth neck which is encompassed by the gingiva, an intermediate member is located between the tooth root and the superstructure, which is formed of tissue-compatible material and which supports the close contact of the gingiva, and by means of which the dental superstructure is connected with the tooth root in a shock-absorbent manner.
