The invention herein relates to the preparation of solution polymerizates of acrylic and methacrylic esters. More particularly, this invention relates to a process for the preparation of solution polymerizates of acrylic or methacrylic acid esters of alcohols wherein acrylic or methacrylic monomers are polymerized in a solvent of high-boiling alcohols of from 8 to 40 carbon atoms and 1 to 6 hydroxyl groups, the total batch to be polymerized containing from about 15 to 85 percent by weight of polymerizable substance, based on the weight of the total batch. This invention also relates to a method of using said solution polymerizates to improve the flow properties of lacquers.

Process for preparing solution polymerizates of acrylic and methacrylic

Method for providing corrosion protective coatings for metal surfaces. The coatings contain conventional coating components to which are added at least one zinc or lead salt of five- or six-membered heterocyclic compounds substituted by at least one hydroxyl or mercapto group and the ring includes at least one nitrogen atom and at least two conjugated double bonds, of which at least one has the formation. ##STR1## as corrosion inhibitors.

Method for providing corrosion resistance to metal objects

This invention is directed to modified alkyd resins containing free hydroxyl groups, said alkyd resins being prepared by reacting glycide and/or glycerol with alkyd resins having acid numbers of from about 30 to 180 until the acid number is from about 5 to 35. The invention is also directed to the use of the modified alkyd resins as lacquer binders.

Modified alkyd resins and their use as lacquer binders

A water-dilutable lacquer based on an alkyd or acrylate resin containing carboxyl groups, which have been neutralized with an amine containing at least one 2,3-dihydroxy propyl group per amine nitrogen. The lacquers according to the invention are particularly suitable for use in the production of baked coatings on thermostable substrates, metal sheets, or shaped metal parts.

Water-dilutable lacquers and their use in baked coatings

A water-dispersed film-forming vehicle suitable for lacquers is disclosed. The vehicle consists of an aqueous dispersion of an air-drying, low acid-number alkyd resin dispersed by the use of a nonionic surfactant consisting of an adduct of ethylene oxide units onto a phenolic compound substituted by a hydrophobic aliphatic radical containing olefinic double bonds, preferably, containing 12 to 18 carbon atoms and 1 to 5 double bonds. The adduct includes 5 to 40 ethylene oxide units per mol. The water-based dispersion diluent in which the alkyd resin is dispersed may include pigments, siccatives for the alkyd drying resin and optionally processing aid solvents.

Water-dispersed film-forming lacquer containing air-drying alkyd resins

A water-dispersed film-forming vehicle suitable for lacquers is disclosed. The vehicle consists of an aqueous dispersion of an air-drying alkyd resin dispersed by the use of a surfactant consisting of an adduct of allyl glycidyl ethers and ethylene oxide units onto a hydrophobic aliphatic radical having a replaceable hydrogen atom, optionally substituted by an aryl radical. The hydrophobic aliphatic radical may be a fatty-acid radical of from 6 to 26 carbon atoms and the aryl substituent is a phenol. The adduct includes 2 to 10 allyl glycidyl units and 5 to 25 ethylene oxide units per mol. The water-based dispersion diluent in which the alkyd resin is dispersed may include pigments, siccatives for the alkyd drying resin and optionally processing-aid solvents.

Aqueous dispersions of cross-linkable alkyd and/or amino resins, which contain surface active amine oxides of the formula ##STR1## wherein R.sub.1 is a hydrocarbon radical of 8 to 30 carbon atoms, which optionally contains 1 to 3 ether groups and/or up to 4 hydroxyl groups and R.sub.2 and R.sub.3 are independently an aliphatic or cycloaliphatic hydrocarbon radical of 1 to 16 carbon atoms, which optionally are interrupted by heteroatoms and/or together contain up to 8 hydroxyl groups, are useful as coating agents or varnish binding agents.

Aqueous dispersions of alkyd and/or amino resins containing amine oxides

Aqueous dispersions of cross-linkable alkyd and/or amino resins, which contain reactive surface active compounds produced by addition of glycide and/or ethylene oxide to a starting compound having a hydrophobic aliphatic radical, optionally substituted by an aryl radical, which contains al least one labile hydrogen atom which can react with an epoxide, wherein the number of hydroxyl groups in said surface active compounds is between 2 and 30, are useful as coating agents or varnish binding agents.
