Apparatus for feeding strips coated with a fusion adhesive on one of their surfaces to a sheet-stack binding apparatus, in particular, for the binding of loose sheets to form brochures or books, such apparatus enabling, in parallel with a binding operation, a strip cut to the required length to be made available for a subsequent binding operation. The apparatus (14) arranged in the strip path downstream of a cutting unit (12) includes a transport carriage (15) which is stationary with respect to the strip path (13) and movable vertically to the strip path and on which a horizontally movable element (16) as well as a plurality of stationary mechanical elements (11, 17) are arranged for holding the strip free from torsion. Driving means (19), control means, as well as a tilting device (18) are provided for transferring transport carriage (15) to a binding apparatus (21) which is arranged vertically to the strip path (13) and holds the sheet stack (22) such that the strip rests on the spine of the sheet stack in a centrally aligned position and is fixed by holding elements (23) of the binding apparatus (21).

A stapling device has a holddown element, a staple forming member, and a staple driving means, which are guided linearly and are movable perpendicular to the upper side of a sheet stack to be stapled. A first pressure spring with a lower spring force is associated with the holddown element. A second pressure spring whose spring force is greater than that of the first pressure spring, is associated with the staple forming member. A third pressure spring is associated with the staple driving means, its spring force being greater than that of the second pressure spring. The pressure springs are arranged with identical working directions perpendicular to the upper side of the sheet stack. The first pressure spring is arranged in preloaded fashion between the holddown element and the staple forming member. The second pressure spring is arranged in preloaded fashion between the staple forming member and the staple driving means. The third pressure spring is arranged in preloaded fashion between the staple driving means and a drive head on which engages an eccentric drive which moves the stapling device in the direction of the arrow onto sheet stack, and thereby controls a force-controlled drive mechanism of the stapling device in an operationally correct sequence.

Method and apparatus for feeding strips having a fusion adhesive coating on one of their surfaces to an advancing transport unit, in particular a sheet-stack binding apparatus where loose sheets are bound to form brochures or books. The method is carried out in that a thickness range of a sheet stack to be bound is associated with a specific width of a strip coated with a fusion adhesive, in that the association is effected in that the thickness of the sheet stack to be bound is determined or in that a selectable predetermined value is provided and in that the sheet-stack thickness value preselected or determined is used to control a drive mechanism (5, 6) which transfers the strip associated with the thickness range of the sheet stack to be bound from separate standby positions (7') of a number of strips (1c, 1d) of different widths to a handling position (12').

Control of the neutralization of surface charges existing on objects such as paper, fabrics, plastic sheets or the like. In order that the surface of an object (1) can be neutralized independently of the output parameters, the electrostatic charge present on the object (1) is determined by means of a charge sensor (2) arranged upstream of the brush. The charge already neutralized via the brush (5) is also continuously measured. The two values are fed to a microprocessor (11) causing an actuator (7) to control the brush-to-object distance. The controlled movement of the brush (5) effects complete neutralization.
