In an electric generating arrangement for a motor vehicle driven by an internal combustion engine, a fuel cell is provided to generate electric energy for operating electric consuming devices. For supplying the fuel cell with fuel, hydrogen gas is cracked from the liquid fuel for the internal combustion engine, and the remaining fuel constituents are either burnt directly in the internal combustion engine, or returned as a liquid condensate into the fuel tank.

A process for the ignition of a regenerative soot filter adapted to be ignited in which the temperature, respectively, heat quantity necessary for the ignition of the filter is produced by charging a storage container located ahead of the soot filter or in connection with the soot filter which contains a hydride-forming alloy or a hydride-forming material. The necessary hydrogen is taken from a second storage container with a different alloy storing hydrogen, which is brought to a temperature by the exhaust gases so that a sufficient hydrogen pressure results therefrom. After the ignition, the second storage container is cooled off and the hydrogen is again conducted from the first storage container heated by the exhaust gases back into the second storage container so that the ignition operation can be repeated with renewed heating of the second storage container.

A method of preheating vehicles equipped with internal combustion engines involves the utilization of the heat released when hydrogen is combined with a high-temperature hydride-forming material contained within a high-temperature reservoir. The high-temperature reservoir contains a sufficient quantity of low-temperature reservoir hydride-forming material that when hydrogen is added from a low-temperature reservoir to the high-temperature reservoir, the quantity of heat which is initially released by the low-temperature hydride-forming material is sufficient to raise the high-temperature reservoir hydride-forming material also contained in the high-temperature reservoir to the reaction temperatures required for absorption of hydrogen and the release of heat. The amount of heat released in the high-temperature reservoir is used to preheat the vehicle by heat exchange with the vehicle passenger compartment and/or engine and the exhaust heat released by the engine during operation is used to desorb the hydrogen from the hydride-forming material in the high-temperature reservoir and transfer the hydrogen back to a low-temperature reservoir.

A heating power plant and a process for operating the power plant with the power plant containing a thermal power installation for producing mechanical motive energy for driving an energy supply device as well as waste heat which may be utlized for heating purposes in the power plant.
