Process for reducing the water vapour diffusion in a plastics composite insulator consisting of several layers by incorporation of at least one mica-containing layer as diffusion barrier in the form of a surface or intermediate layer on at least one plastics body, constituting the composite insulator.

A lightning arrester having two terminal fittings (3), at least one resistor core (1) which contacts with the latter and which is of voltage-dependent resistance material, and an insulating housing (5) closely surrounding the resistor core (1). A lightning arrester of the generic type is to be created which can be manufactured with relatively low energy expenditure, without additional assembly effort and by a simple process. This is achieved by the housing (5) consisting of a resin matrix with embedded filler, the filler making up over 80% by weight of the housing, and by the housing (5) surrounding at least one resistor core (1) and the region of the terminal fittings (3) contacting the latter. The housing (5) is produced by the setting of a cast moulding compound.

In modern ozone generators high power densities can be achieved using ceramic-based dielectrics and suitable gap widths and double cooling. By constructing the dielectric layer from dielectric powders of different grain size and binding with artificial resin, the long-term breakdown voltage of the dielectric layer can be increased to such an extent that they fulfil the operating requirements.

Provided is an electrical insulation body useful in electrical installations operated with SF.sub.6 as a quenching and/or insulating gas. The insulation body is comprised of a thermosetting resin matrix and a mineral filler of predominantly quartz powder and from about 5 to 50 percent by weight of the mineral filler of a second mineral powder component for increasing resistance to SF.sub.6 cleavage products, which second component comprises at least one alkaline earth metal carbonate.
