A hydraulically supported roll includes a stationary crosshead extending through a rotatable hollow roll, which is heated at its inner and outer circumferences. A thermostatic control and regulating device is provided to keep the temperatures at the inner circumference and the outer circumference of the hollow roll at the same level during the heatin-up and/or cooling-down phase.

Apparatus for controlling the heating and cooling of a roll

A calender arrangement including a first stack of rolls with a first heated hard roll, which, together with a center soft roll, forms a nip. On the other side of the soft roll, another soft roll is arranged, which, together with the soft roll, forms another nip. A second stack of rolls with a soft roll which interacts with a second hard heated roll follows the first stack of rolls. The second hard heated roll contacts the paper web on the side lying opposite the side contacted by the first heated hard roll in the first stack. A further hard roll can also cooperate with the hard roll in the second stack to form a hard nip. The treatment that the paper web undergoes, varies in accordance with the type and sequence of the nips through which it is guided.

Calender arrangement

A wet press of a paper-making machine includes a pair of rolls defining a roll gap through which the paper to be treated and belt-shaped felt are simultaneously conducted. The felt is guided in a closed loop path by additional rolls which include a tightening roll. The tightening roll can be tilted to reduce roll vibrations by tightening the felt to set vibratory marks formed in the felt at an angle relative to the transverse width of the felt and the roll gap. A controllable positioning device is provided which includes a motor operated by a controller during predetermined time intervals or as a function of actual vibrations sensed at the pair of rolls forming the roll gap to automatically vary the tilt angle.

Wet press with vibration control

A supercalender at the output of a paper machine includes two pairs of zone-wise deflection-controlled rollers. Each pair has a hard surface roller and a soft roller with an elastic outer layer or covering having a minimum hardness of 85.degree. Shore D. The hard rollers are disposed on one side and the soft rollers on the other side of the travel path of the paper.

In a device for acting on webs of material which includes at least one roll, which comprises a revolving hollow cylinder constituting the working roll circumference, a crosshead going through the cylinder with spacing on all sides, and against which the hollow cylinder is braced by means of a fluid pressure medium contained in its interior between the crosshead and the inside of the hollow cylinder in at least one chamber, force members which operate in the action plane of the roll and engage the ends of the crosshead protruding from the hollow cylinder, or corresponding points of a counter roll, and a control for holding the forces exerted by the fluid pressure medium on the one hand and by the force members on the other hand substantially in equilibrium, force measuring cells are inserted between the force members and the ends of the crosshead or the corresponding points of a counter roll, respectively, which cells substantially transmit the entire exerted force, and means provided for feeding the signal of said cells to the control, so as to result in more accurate control.
