A catalyst support is produced by mixing particulate synthetic silica with 0.5&#x2013;10 parts by weight of one or more particulate oxides or phosphates of the elements of group IIA, IIIB, IVB, VA, VIB, VIIB, VIII, IB, IIB, IIIA, IVA and lanthanides or precursors thereof, shaping the mixture and then calcining the shaped mixture to form the finished support. The formed support has improved stability relative to aging resistance under hydrothermal conditions. The catalyst support is used together with phosphoric acid in the production of alcohols from olefins by hydration. The resultant hydration catalysts have excellent activity and selectivity.

Moldings based on pyrogenic silicon dioxide with a pore volume of 0.5 to 1.8 ml/g are prepared by homogenizing pyrogenic silicon dioxide with methylhydroxyethyl cellulose, wax and polyethylene glycol with the addition of water, subjecting this mixture to a compounding and shaping process, extruding, optionally cutting the extrudate to the desired length using a cutting device, drying at a temperature of 70&deg; to 150&deg; C. and conditioning for a period of 30 minutes to 10 hours at a temperature of 400&deg; to 1200&deg; C. The moldings may be used as catalysts or catalyst supports for the preparation of vinyl acetate monomer, the hydration of ethylene and the hydration of propylene.

The use of modified silicon dioxide as a catalyst support in catalytic reactions under hydrothermal conditions is described. The pore structure of the supports may be stabilized against hydrothermal reaction conditions by impregnating the catalyst supports with elements of Group IVB of the Periodic Tube of Elements.

Compacts produced from a pyrogenically produced oxide, magnesium stearate, methyl cellulose and urea are mixed together in the presence of water, compacted, dried, comminuted to a powder, and the powder is pressed with an isostatic press to compacts and the compacts tempered. The resulting compacts have an outside diameter of 16 to 100 mm.

Shaped, activated Raney metal fixed-bed catalysts are obtained by molding a powder of at least one catalyst alloy, comprising at least one Raney process metal as catalytically active component and a leachable alloy component, and a powder of pure Raney process metal as binder with the addition of a shaping aid and pore-producer and subsequent calcination at temperatures below 850.degree. C. During calcination the shaping aid and pore-producer are burned away. Catalyst alloy powder and binder powder thereby sinter together to give a mechanically stable and porous molded item. A carrier catalyst containing copper and alkali ions on an annular carrier of surface-active material is defined by the dimensions of the carrier body and the porosity of the finished catalyst. Its total pore volume is 0.6-1.0 ml/g, pores smaller than 4 nm diameter are not present, pores of 8-20 nm diameter constitute at least 80% of the total pore volume and the remainder consists of macropores with a diameter greater than 20 nm (i.e., up to 200 nanometers). The catalyst is suitable for the production of 1,2-dichloroethane by means of the oxychlorination of ethylene.
