An elevator system () includes a sensor () for detecting the presence of an individual within a hoistway (). A controller () prevents movement of an elevator car () whenever an individual is in the hoistway (). A pit override device () provides an override signal to the controller () permitting movement of the elevator car () if someone is in a pit (). A car top override device () selectively provides an override signal to the controller () permitting movement of the car. A disclosed example includes controlling at least one light () within the hoistway () in conjunction with movement or attempted movement of the elevator car ().

Elevator system control responsive to hoistway access detection

An improved hoistway access detection system including three safety chains, one for monitoring door position on the even numbered floors, one for monitoring door position on the odd numbered floors, and one for monitoring the position of the pit door, wherein an elevator car is slowly moved to the alternate floor upon detection and subsequent closure of an open pit door and any landing door.
