Method and apparatus for detecting electric energy delivered to the heart of a body when performing defibrillation. The method comprises the steps of applying a defibrillator with electrodes placed on opposite sides of the heart; applying an apparatus on the body and between said electrodes for detecting and measuring electric and/or magnetic fields; performing defibrillation by delivering electric energy to the body; detecting electric energy running through the heart with said apparatus, and indicating electric energy applied to the heart. The apparatus for performing the method comprises detection and indications means for performing the method.

This invention relates to a system for monitoring the position of a measuring unit when placed on a person, especially on the chest of a person, the system comprising a drive unit generating a magnetic field oscillating at a predetermined frequency adapted to be positioned on the opposite side of the person, e.g. chest to back dimensions, and the measuring unit being adapted to measure the magnetic field strength, the system including calculating means for calculating the distance between the measuring unit and the drive unit.

Method and system for measuring chest parameters, especially during CPR

A system and a method is disclosed for monitoring parameters during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, including a compression measuring means, a ventilation measuring means and a processing means. If at least one of the measured values deviate from a respective reference range, the processing means provides an indication of the deviation. If more than one of the measured values deviate from a respective reference range, the deviations are prioritized with an indication being provided first to the deviation having a higher priority. The invention also regards a device for positioning on a patient's chest during cardiopulmonary resuscitation, which measures compression and which comprises a feedback module for providing a tactile output related to the measurements.

Standalone system for assisting in a life-saving situation

The present invention provides a CPR sensor that includes a thin and substantially flat flexible substrate having one or more sensor arrays, a power source, an output interface and a processor or analog circuit, all of which are disposed on the substantially flat flexible substrate. The substrate can be any shape (e.g., rectangular, circular, a polygon, an irregular shape that is decorative) and made from a polymer, metal film or other suitable material. Note that the substrate can be rigid or semi-flexible instead of flexible. A protective layer may cover the sensor array, the power source, and the processor or analog circuit. Alternatively, a protective covering can be used to encapsulate the device. The one or more sensor arrays measure one or more of the following compressions characteristics: compression depth, compression force, compression frequency and compression acceleration.

Cardiopulmonary resuscitation sensor

The invention regards a resuscitation system having a chest compression device to repeatedly compress the chest of a patient and thereafter cause or allow the chest to expand. The device includes an electric motor connected to a compression element. A controller is coupled to the electric motor and causes the motor to actuate the compression element according to a predetermined profile. The controller is further operable to draw the compression element away from a patient's chest upon detecting a malfunction.

This invention relates to an external defibrillator whose language of operation can be easily changed when the defibrillator is deployed for use. Defibrillators include, manual defibrillators, automatic or semi-automatic external defibrillators ('AEDs') and defibrillator trainers. In one embodiment, the invention provides a way to change the language in which the defibrillator delivers instructions to a user. Defibrillators of this invention would contain multiple languages in their memory. During the set-up of the defibrillator some or all of the languages could be designated as a language in which a prompt will be offered. Additionally, during set-up, one language will be designated as the default language. Once the defibrillator is deployed for use in an emergency, the operator will indicate a language preference for the defibrillator operating instructions. Once the user has indicated which language the prompts should be in, the defibrillator will then begin instructing the user in the use of the defibrillator in that language. Conversely, if the user fails to make any language preference indication, the defibrillator will begin instructing the user in the use of the defibrillator in the default language. In an alternate embodiment, the defibrillator issues each instruction in multiple languages.

Multilingual defibrillator

This invention relates to an external defibrillator whose language of operation can be easily changed when the defibrillator is deployed for use. A defibrillation system includes an automatic external defibrillator and a supply module containing items for use in connection with the automatic external defibrillator. The supply module may be physically coupled to the defibrillator to ensure the availability of the items during operation of the defibrillator. Items within the supply module or the supply module itself may also be electrically coupled to the defibrillator to reduce the amount of time required to deploy the defibrillator when responding to an emergency medical situation. Items containable by the supply module include pads, ECG leads, gloves, scissors, PCMCIA cards and defibrillator batteries, as well as any other components or supplies desired to be included by the operator or manufacturer. The supply module may be provided with a visible or electronically readable indicia of the shelf life of the supply module or one or more items contained by the supply module. Memory or other circuitry may be provided on the supply module to communicate with the defibrillator prior to, during or after operation of the defibrillator to facilitate exchanges of information between the supply module, defibrillator, defibrillator operator and defibrillator maintenance personnel.

Defibrillation system having defibrillator with replaceable supply module

A system for communication between sensors in training equipment and electrodes for a defibrillator (AED) or a defibrillator-trainer (AED-T) provides for determining electrode positioning and providing feedback to the user. The training equipment is provided with a non-conductive chest skin, and the communication is wireless and bi-directional. The information from the manikin is generated by a microprocessor with a digital-analog converter. The information signal is transmitted to the sensors in the manikin by use of drivers, which sensors each constitute one half of a non-galvanic coupling, in which the chest skin separates the halves, and the other halves of the non-galvanic couplings are formed by electrodes that are attached to the chest skin, the non-galvanic coupling being in the form of capacitors or coils.

A system for measuring parameters during chest compression in a life-saving situation or a practice situation is provided, in which a pressure pad containing e.g. an accelerometer and a force activated switch (SW), as well as a calculation unit (B), is positioned on a patients chest, alternatively on or inside a manikin's chest, in order to register parameters such as depression distance, duration or rate of depressions during chest compression.

A system for detecting an electrode position for a defibrillator on a manikin includes electrical conductive faces that are provided in hidden positions under the manikin skin in locations that correspond to correct and incorrect positions for placement of the defibrillator respectively, and which constitute the respective halves of a capacitor. The faces are connected to a first and a second oscillator respectively, which oscillators emit two different frequencies. A position indicator may be arranged inside the manikin, which indicator will give notification to the user by the use of light sources, e.g., light emitting diodes that shine through the manikin skin, or by activation of a sound signal. A signal analyzing device judges the correctness of the electrode positions via output from the oscillators.

A defibrillator utilizes at least one flash tube for switching electrical energy from an energy source to a heart patient. The flash tube has a high impedance state in which the patient is isolated from the energy. In response to a triggering pulse, the flash tube enters a low impedance state in which energy is delivered to the patient. An additional switching element in the defibrillator operates to interrupt energy delivery through the flash tube so that a truncated defibrillation pulse having a desired energy level is produced.

A defibrillator is described with dual processors for verifying the performance of the defibrillator and halting the application of a defibrillation pulse to a patient if a failure of system components is detected. In accordance with one aspect of the invention, verification is performed to determine whether a transfer relay switch should be closed to permit the application of a defibrillation pulse through the transfer relay switch to a patient. In addition, in one form of the invention, an electronic switch is provided in a series discharge circuit through the patient. Verification by both processors of proper conditions for application of a defibrillation pulse is required before a determination pulse is applied through the switch. In addition, an impedance circuit is provided with a mechanism for checking the accuracy of the circuit during operation of the defibrillator.
