There is provided a drive carrier. The drive carrier is configured to receive a media drive and is also configured to be removably receivable in a receiving location of a computer system. The drive carrier includes a base portion, a handle portion and a latch mechanism for securing the carrier within the receiving location. The base portion and the handle portion are configured to co-operate to operate the latch mechanism on insertion and/or removal of the carrier from the receiving location, for inserting and/or removing the carrier from the receiving location and operating the latch mechanism with a single movement of the handle portion.

Drive carrier

Computing apparatus including a housing that defines a cavity. The computer apparatus further includes within the cavity multiple computing components, such as a processor, memory, and so on, and a fan for generating an airflow to cool these components. There is a first path defining an air inflow for the fan, and a second path defining an air outflow for the fan. One of these paths is externally ducted to a vent facility in a first wall of the housing, and the other one of the paths communicates with the cavity adjacent the first wall. Typically, the externally ducted airflow is arranged to cool a CPU, which is the component most vulnerable to over-heating.

A rack mountable shelf supports a plurality of field replaceable units (FRUs) in the form of server cartridges, or blades. The blades are provided with an enclosure that includes a metal portion and a plastics portion. The provision of a blade enclosure for the blade can protect the components of the blade from physical damage and can also isolate them from electrical, static and other effects that could be potentially damaging to the blade components. The use of metal can provide strength and electromagnetic interference shielding with a very thin layer. The use of plastics can provide lightness, flexibilty in design, and the avoidance of metal to metal contact to facilitate insertion and removal of the blades.

Computer module housing

A housing is provided for a modular computer system. The housing comprises a face through which a first removable computer system module is receivable at a module receiving location. The housing also comprises a barrier movable between a first position wherein the barrier is operable to obstruct a flow of air through the module receiving location and a second position in which the computer system module is received in the module receiving location.

Computer system cooling

A media drive mount includes first and second first and second channels open at one end for receiving locating protrusions on a media drive. The locating protrusions can, for example, be screwed onto the media drive mount. Resilient detents are provided in the channels to co-operate with the resilient detents. The resilient detents can be configured to provide resistance during insertion and removal of the media drive, the former being used to provide positive locating of the media drive, and the latter to hold the media drive in the mount. Mounting and demounting of the media drive in the mount can be achieved without the use of tools.

An ejector mechanism is provided for a field replaceable module (e.g., a server blade) of modular computer system (e.g., a blade server system). The field replaceable module can be received in a carrier of the modular computer system and can have an elongate face. An ejector mechanism, that can possibly also act as an injection mechanism, can be located at the elongate face and can include an elongate lever extending substantially along the elongate front face. A pivotal mounting for the lever can be located towards a first end thereof and an ejection protrusion can be provided at the first end. The use of a lever that extends substantially along the elongate face of the field replaceable module provides an efficient ejection mechanism with good mechanical advantage.
