A nozzle system is provided comprising a nozzle tip supported in a nozzle body with an alignment member. The alignment member has a connection for engaging a corresponding connection located on the nozzle body. The alignment member also has an aperture concentric with the sleeve that has a tapered engagement surface for contacting a tapered engagement surface on the nozzle tip. A first melt channel is defined through the nozzle body and a second melt channel is defined through the nozzle tip. The melt channel in the nozzle tip has a first section that extends along a first axis from an inlet, a second section that extends from the first section at an incline and a third section that extends from the second section parallel to and eccentric with the first axis. The resulting melt channel defines a straight through channel parallel to said first axis from said inlet to said opening.

Injection nozzle system

Injection molding apparatus and method wherein a number of cylindrical inserts or plugs each having a curved melt duct therethrough are accurately aligned and securely mounted in spaced cylindrical openings through a melt distribution manifold. An alignment and retaining pin made of a very strong material extends from a bore in the manifold into a bore in the insert. The manifold is heated and the inserts and pins are cooled prior to insertion into place to provide very tight fits when they are at the same temperature which very accurately aligns the melt ducts through the inserts. The combination of the inserts fitting tightly in the openings and the strength of the pins is sufficient to withstand the rearward forces from the pressurized melt being injected through the curved melt ducts to retain the inserts in place.

Method of making an injection molding cylindrical manifold insert

A seepage system for an injection molding apparatus includes a manifold plate with a first portion and a second portion abutting the first portion, and a seepage passage positioned between the first and second portions. The second portion may have at least a portion of a melt passage, and the seepage passage may have an outlet. The seepage system also has one or more seepage channels, with each seepage channel being connected to and in communication with the seepage passage. Moreover, the seepage system includes one or more seepage bores for receiving the flow of excess material, with each seepage bore being connected to and in communication with one of the seepage channels. Gravity is used to assist the flow of excess material from the one or more seepage bores through the seepage channels and the seepage passage.

Injection molding cylindrical manifold insert and method

Valve gated injection molding apparatus having three position valve member actuating mechanism for multilayer molding. A first melt passage extends to the gate through an annular channel in a heated nozzle, while a second melt passage extends around an elongated valve member in a central melt channel. A rack member engaging the rear end of the valve member is driven by a pinion member connected to a front piston in a front cylinder. A rear piston in a shorter rear cylinder aligned with the front cylinder has a stem extending forwardly into the front cylinder. First, air pressure applied behind the rear piston retracts the valve member from a first closed position to a second partially open position wherein melt flows only through the annular channel. Then, air pressure applied behind the front piston retracts the valve member to a third fully open position wherein melt flows simultaneously through both melt channels to provide the three layers. When the cavity is nearly full, air pressure is released behind and applied in front of the front piston to return the valve member to the second position until the cavity is full. Air pressure is then released behind the third piston to advance the valve member to the first closed position in which its front end is seated in the gate for ejection.
