Fine-celled foams are produced by a process in which a styrene polymer is melted, the melt is mixed with a volatile blowing agent and a nucleating agent under superatmospheric pressure, the mixture is let down to atmospheric pressure, and the foam is cooled. The nucleating agent employed comprises from 0.02 to 2% by weight of the calcium salt of a long-chain fatty acid, and from 0.01 to 1% by weight of a finely divided, inorganic substance which is insoluble in the styrene polymer, a mixture of calcium stearate and magnesium oxide being preferred.

Production of fine-celled foams from styrene polymers

A process for the preparation of polyurethane foams modified with melamine-formaldehyde precondensates, in which the precondensates employed are storage-stable, aqueous 40-85% strength by weight resin solutions which are obtained by condensing melamine with formaldehyde in a molar ratio of 1:1.1-1.75 in aqueous solution at a pH which, at least periodically, is above 8, and at from 60 to 130.degree. C., until one part by volume of resin solution can be diluted with from 0.5 to 4 parts by volume of water at 20.degree. C. without causing a persisting cloudiness.

Preparation of polyurethane foams modified with melamine-formaldehyde

A process for the manufacture of a resilient foam based on a melamine-formaldehyde condensate, wherein an aqueous or alcoholic solution or dispersion containing a melamine-formaldehyde precondensate, an emulsifier, a blowing agent and a hardener is foamed by ultra-high-frequency irradiation and the foam is hardened by crosslinking the precondensate. The foam may be employed for heat and sound insulation, and as a packaging material.

This invention relates to a process of making flame-retardant polystyrene foams by an extrusion process in which a stabilizer of a dialkyl-tin carboxylate or a mixture of a dialkyl tin carboxylate and a barium and/or cadmium carboxylate is added to the extrusion melt.

Process for the manufacture of flame retardant polystyrene foams

Particulate expandable styrene polymers which contain an organic bromine compound as the flameproofing agent and an organic compound possessing a labile C--C, O--O or N.dbd.N bond as the synergistic agent for flameproofing. The flameproofing agent is applied to the surface of the particles while the synergistic agent is homogeneously incorporated into the particles. The polymers can be converted to self-extinguishing foams.

Flameproofed expandable styrene polymers

Particulate self-extinguishing thermoplastic molding compositions based on styrene polymers containing volatile blowing agents are surface-coated with an organic bromine compound and, to stabilize the bromine compound against photodegradation, a N-hydroxyphenylbenzotriazole or a hydroxybenzophenone. The molding compositions may be used for the manufacture of foams by expanding the blowing agents at elevated temperatures.
