A compound particle separator, e.g. for removing dust particles from flue gases comprises a horizontal flow electrostatic precipitator whose inlet side is provided with a centrifugal separator assembly comprising a plurality of centrifugal separator cells with at least the gas outlets of the cells lying above the electrostatic precipitator as to the row of such cells closest to the latter. This arrangement improves the distribution of gas to the electrostatic precipitator.

Compound particle separator

A multizone vertical-flow electrostatic precipitator, particularly for intermittent operation, comprises collecting electrodes consisting of plate strips which extend vertically through all of a plurality of separating zones and which are entirely smooth in the direction of gas flow and have a constant shape in cross section (in planes perpendicular to the gas flow). The separating zones are each provided with separate tension frames supporting the corona-discharge electrodes, the frames being electrically insulated from one another. The system of the invention eliminates the need for double-wall electrodes and special means for preventing entrainment of collected dust by the gases traversing the spaces between the collecting electrode walls.

Multizone electrostatic precipitator

A dust-collecting electrostatic precipitator has a housing, the top of which is adapted to form a pressure-relief opening and is closed by a sealing membrane divided by a plurality of intentional tear lines into zones which can be blown upwardly and back to relieve pressure within the housing. The membrane is covered, in turn, by a rain-shielding roof spaced above the sealing top and having a portion forming an elastic cover which is only loosely held against internal pressure.

Dust collector with pressure-relief opening

A radial-flow scrubber in which a gas is passed downwardly through an annular gap after having been treated with a liquid in which the gap is adjusted by a ring disposed below the orifice for the gas/liquid mixture and shiftable toward and away from the latter on one end of a fluid-containing diaphragm, especially a metal bellows. The fluid pressure in the bellows may be maintained at atmospheric levels or may be adjusted by sealing the bellows or feeding fluid under pressure thereto. Advantageously the pressure within the bellows, to control the expansion or contraction thereof is a function of the pressure of the liquid/gas mixture or its flow velocity.

Radial flow scrubber

A dust-collecting electrostatic precipitator in which the collecting plates are constituted from interlocked thin sheet-metal strips with loosely interengaging edges and are suspended at the top from a common carrier, in which stabilization is increased against vibration by providing the lateral edges of the plates with short retaining members in a single horizontal zone or in a plurality of such zones spaced apart vertically from one another. The retaining members are interconnected by a rigid element. The system is particularly suited for tall electrostatic precipitators having a height of, say, 15 meters in which high gas velocities would otherwise cause extensive vibration of the electrode strips.

Dust collecting electrostatic precipitator

An ionizing electrode for the generation of a corona discharge in an electrostatic dust-collecting precipitator comprising an elongated metallic body provided with spaced-apart pointed tips, and a layer of nylon-11 material covering the body and having a thickness of 100 to 300 microns, preferably 150 to 250 microns. The electrostatic precipitator has an operating temperature of at most 140.degree. and preferably less than 120.degree.C.
