A roller for thermal pressure treatment of web-type media such as paper or non-wovens, provided with an inner heating system and comprising a base body made of hardened and tempered wrought steel or alloyed cast iron, an intermediate layer applied to the surface thereof and a hard wearing layer applied thereon. Peripheral bores or canals extending parallel to the axis are arranged in the base body of the roller at a regular distance from the surface, being distributed in a regular manner on the circle formed about the roller axis. The materials used and the arrangement of the peripheral bores are such that the roller can be used in calanders in a method wherein the surface temperatures of the roller exceed 140&#xb0; C., the heating capacity is more than 35 kW/m, operational speeds are more than 1200 m/min, line pressures are greater than 250 kN/m and the processed webs of material weigh more than 45 g/mand have a degree of moisture of over 5%.

The present invention relates to a roller for the thermomechanical treatment of a web-shaped medium, the roller including: a roller body; axial bores for a thermal treatment fluid which are incorporated in roller body near to an outer surface of the roller body and into which the thermal treatment fluid flows on an inflow side; inflow zones, formed on the inflow side in the upstream ends of the bores or in feed channels through which the thermal treatment fluid flows into the bores; and directing or guiding portions provided in the inflow zones, which transfer a rotational movement of the roller onto the thermal treatment fluid, the directing portions at least substantially completely transfer the rotational movement onto the thermal treatment fluid and in this way suppress a relative swirl between the bores and the thermal treatment fluid, while still in the inflow zones.

Roller for the thermomechanical treatment of a web-shaped medium

A roller body for a roller, for pressure-treating or temperature-treating or combined pressure- and temperature-treating a web-shaped medium, for example paper, includes a casting body made of an iron-based alloy comprising graphite lamellae. Particular regions of the roller body are placed under tensile stresses during or after production. The stresses being applied are larger than those which occur in these regions during operation of a roller. The additionally applied tensile stresses trigger local plastic deformations in peripheral regions of the graphite lamellae, such that once the tensile stresses are no longer applied, the roller body behaves elastically and no longer permanently deforms up to the stress level achieved.

A roller for thermally treating web-shaped media, comprising a roller body which is rotatable about its central longitudinal axis, and peripheral bores introduced in axial parallel in the roller body, for conveying a heating medium, wherein other axially parallel balancing bores are formed in the roller body in addition to the peripheral bores for the heating medium, said balancing bores running from an end face of the roller body towards the center of the roller body.

In a group of rolls for a calender for processing material webs, comprising at least two rolls each having a roll body made of a cast or forged iron material, at least one of the roll bodies consists of chilled cast iron or shell-chilled cast iron. One or more rolls may have a cover of a resilient material, such as a polymeric plastic. Although it is possible for the outer diameters of the rolls to differ, the sag of the rolls when they are supported only in their rolling-contact bearings is substantially equal. In order to produce appropriate rolls, following the essential machining steps of the roll bodies, that is to say, for example, following casting, following preliminary turning, following preliminary boring and, if appropriate, following the introduction of peripheral bores, the actual mean modulus of elasticity of the entire roll body is measured and, as a function of this, in particular the inner diameters of the central bores are produced. In addition, methods for influencing the sag of the rolls in a deliberate way, by selecting appropriate materials, the relationships of material structures in the roll body or by means of the deliberate introduction of ballast into the central bore or else into separate peripheral bores in the roll bodies, are described.

Roller group

A roll for thermal and mechanical treatment of a web-shaped product, for example paper, comprises a roll body ( ), thermal treatment conduits ( ), insulating devices ( ), a trunnion flange ( ), and actuators ( ). The insulating devices are capable of elongation in the thermal treatment conduits in the longitudinal direction of the conduits. The treatment conduits are for a thermal treatment fluid and are oriented in the roll body in the vicinity of the surface of the roll body. The trunnion flange is applied to the roll body, and the actuators are mounted in the trunnion flange and connected to the insulating devices. The actuators are mounted shiftable and fixable in the longitudinal direction of the thermal treatment conduits and are connected to the insulating devices for joint shifting.

Through the flanged trunnion of a heated roll for the treatment of a material web, more particularly a calender roll, a partial flow of the heat transfer fluid used for heating is diverted between the supply and return of the fluid so that the flanged trunnion is heated or cooled in its central portion. For influencing the radial expansion of the trunnion when subjected to heat and increasing the fluid flow heating or cooling the trunnion, the trunnion may comprise a central cavity sealing off the centerbore of the roll, the partial flow of the heat transfer fluid being directed through this central cavity.

Roll adjustable in shape

A roller or roll heated by a gaseous heat carrier medium, preferably steam, having axially parallel peripheral passages for use in the pressing or smoothing station of paper making machines is connected to a device for the feeding and draining of the heat carrier medium so that for cooling the heated roller a cooling means is switched into the heating/cooling circuit and the direction of flow of the heat carrier medium may be reversed. Further aspects in accordance with the invention permit regulated cooling of the roller by blending heat carrier condensate into the return flow of heat carrier, by switching over between operation with a gaseous heat carrier and operation with a condensed heat carrier, as well as application of the invention in rollers having roller drive arranged on one flanged trunnion.

A heatable roll, in particular for processing web-like materials, for example paper, which includes a roll body having peripheral passages or bores which are preferably arranged parallel to the axis of the roll body, and at least one, and preferably two, screwed-on flange journals. Heating elements are arranged in the bores which extend in the axial direction parallel to the roll body.

Roll having heating means

A glazing or calendering roll includes a roll body having a flange journal at each end of the roll body and peripheral passages formed near the roll surface in the roll body for conducting a fluid heat or cold carrier through the roll. The roll has a central bore with large diameter. In the central bore, a displacement body is arranged in such a manner that between the inner wall of the central bore and the outer wall of the displacement body an annular gap is formed for conducting the fluid heat or cold carrier therethrough.

A heating or cooling roller comprises a stationary axle, at least one hydrostatic or hydrodynamic bearing element to support a rotary roller shell on the stationary axle, and a heatable or coolable heat transfer medium which flows through an annular gap between the stationary axle and the rotary roller shell; the roller shell has peripheral axially parallel orifices for the heat transfer medium which is supplied and discharged through at least one radial channel in the stationary axle and via at least one annular space between the roller shell and the stationary axle.
