An apparatus by which a sensor holder of a surface testing apparatus can be moved along a preselected path of movement over the surface to be examined. The apparatus has a guide rail establishing the path of movement, which can emulate the contour of the surface and on which the sensor holder is supported.

A vibration table which essentially comprises a stationary base and a table top for receiving loads. The table top can be periodically moved back and forth, and is hydrostatically or pneumatically supported on the base. A plurality of pressure pockets, which are adapted to receive carrier medium, are disposed in a bearing surface of either the table top or the base. The table top is connected to the base by means of a spring system which includes a plurality of parallel and pivotably arranged coupling elements.

A fluid pressure operated press has a drive piston which is movable in a cylinder and has a drive surface side and an opposite return surface side which is connected with a ram which operates on a workpiece. An accumulator is connected to the respective cylinder spaces disposed on the respective drive and return surface sides through a control so as to effect the movement of the piston in a drive direction by admission of a fluid pressure source and pressure from an accumulator in a selected amount to the cylinder space on the drive surface side. The return of the drive piston is effected by applying a fluid pressure to the return surface side. A difference in the areas of the return surface side of the drive piston and the combination of the drive surface side with a central area surface associated with the drive surface side, defines an effective piston area. The accumulation is selectively connectable to the cylinder to effect a fluid pressure over the effective piston are which is in order to permit the fluid pressure on the central piston area side to direct flow to the accumulator so that the piston will be displaced against the accumulator pressure. A part of the force acts on the return side overcoming friction to lift the drive piston from the workpiece. Fluid pressure is removed from the accumulator as needed during the return movement in an amount equal to the product of the stroke times the return side area, and fluid pressure is delivered to the accumulator in an amount of the stroke times the drive side piston area so that the product of the fluid spent during the return movement equals the stroke times the difference between the effective surface areas of the drive side and the return side.

A press which has a short ram stroke in which the ram is movable in a single plane in a working direction and return direction, particularly for high speed cutting presses, comprises, a press frame with a ram carried by the press frame which is supported by springs which are rigidly connected to the ram and to the press frame and hold the ram resiliently for movement in the working and return direction but rigidly in all other planes. The springs advantageously comprise at least two spring elements which are arranged substantially perpendicular to the direction of the ram stroke and may advantageously comprise sets of bar springs arranged on each of two sides of the ram and connected from the ram to the frame; leaf springs having lateral extensions which are arranged one above the other and connected between the ram and the frame or springs arranged in a network or pattern in the form of spiral spring assemblies or spring packs which permit the displacement of the ram in the working and return stroke but hold it rigidly in other planes.

A ring rolling machine for rolling a ring blank engaged over a mandrel roll which has an outside diameter smaller than the inside diameter of the mandrel roll comprises a rotatable main roll having an annular curved surface. The main roll is rotated about a fixed axis which is spaced at a fixed distance from the mandrel. Its curved surface is divided into a loading zone having a radius less than the spacing from said main roll access to the ring blank, a rolling zone having a variable radius curved with a continuously increasing value and a rounding zone extending between the rolling zone and the loading zone which is of substantially constant radius.
