Process for the treatment of CO-rich gases incurred in the manufacture of phosphorus, which gases contain impurities like water, and compounds of sulfur, nitrogen and phosphorus. The gas is passed through regenerators for the purpose of removing impurities. In this manner, a product gas is obtained from which impurities have been condensed or frozen.

Gaseous components are scrubbed from gaseous mixtures with a physical solvent; the latter, after absorption of the scrubbed-out gaseous components, is regenerated by expansion and stripping, wherein the gaseous fraction being released is discharged and the regenerated solvent is recycled into the scrubbing step. To reduce the content of solvent vapors in the gases to be exhausted into the atmosphere, the released gaseous fraction is cooled in heat exchange with non-thermally degasified solvent in order to condense out entrained solvent vapors from the gaseous fraction.

A process for regulating the NH.sub.3 content in an organic liquid that acts as a physical scrubbing agent and is used in a procedure for absorbing sour gases from gaseous mixtures. To ensure undisturbed and reliable carrying out of the scrubbing process, an ammonia-precipitating precipitant is added to the scrubbing agent and the precipitate is then separated from the scrubbing agent. Preferred precipitants include sulphuric acid and phosphuric acid. The ammonia salts are effective fertilizers.

Method and apparatus for regulating the NH.sub.3 content in scrubbing

The NH.sub.3 content is regulated in methanol used in a process for scrubbing out sour gases from gaseous mixtures and/or for preventing ice formation prior to the scrubbing step. The methanol is freed, after the scrubbing step, respectively of absorbed gaseous components and/or water, and reused in the cycle as scrubbing liquid and/or for preventing ice formation. A strong acid is added to the methanol from water-soluble ammonium salts. Thereby, dissolved salts are formed which are removed together with water. Deleterious trace acids are also removed by an analogous treatment with a basic compound. The acid/base treatments are conducted in succession.

Non-precipitating regulation of ammonia content in sour gas solvent

For preventing the fouling and/or plugging of apparatus with metallic sulfides in the processing and purification of synthesis gases contaminated with metal carbonyls, wherein the synthesis gases are scrubbed with a physical solvent, which solvent is regenerated and reused, an organic phosphite, e.g., trimethyl phosphite, and/or an organic phosphine, e.g., triethyl phosphine or triphenyl phosphine, is added as a complexing agent to the scrubbing media, preferably in between the scrubbing and absorption regenerating steps.

For avoiding equipment fouling from metal sulfide deposition in the processing of cracked gases containing H.sub.2 S and CO, the reactive metal species capable of carbonyl formation are prevented from contacting equipment parts operating within a temperature range favoring the formation of metal carbonyls, e.g., 30.degree.-250.degree. C. To accomplish this, the cracked gas is subjected to solids separation to remove dust particles containing the reactive metal species, or the cracked gas is oxidized to inactivate the metal species. Cooling water is also subjected to a preceding step of removing the reactive metal species.

Method and apparatus for regenerating physically acting organic scrubbing agents laden with sulfur dioxide and/or sulfur trioxide and eventually carbon dioxide in the course of a gas purification process. Equipment costs and energy losses are reduced by adding ammonia and, if necessary, water, to the laden scrubbing fluids and then separating the resultant ammonia sulfite and/or ammonia sulfate. Large differences in temperature between the scrubbing steps and the regenerating steps are not needed. A beneficial energy balance results.

Methods for removing acidic gases from gaseous mixtures, such as hydrocarbon containing gaseous mixtures, are disclosed. The method includes washing the gaseous mixtures with a methanol wash stream containing more than about 0.5 weight percent ammonia therein, so as to remove at least a portion of the acidic gases from the gaseous mixtures and to produce a laden methanol stream containing said acidic gases therein, regenerating said laden methanol stream by removing a portion of said acidic gases therefrom, so as to regenerate said wash stream, and recycling the regenerated wash stream.

In the removal of sour gases by scrubbing with an aqueous alkali metal salt solution, e.g. a solution of K.sub.2 CO.sub.3, the circulating scrubbing liquid is gradually contaminated with organic acids, especially formic acid, which in turn ties up K.sup.+ as the formate which is ineffective for scrubbing purposes. To remove the organic acids, at least a partial stream of the circulating scrubbing liquid is subjected to an oxidation step under conditions leading to the oxidation of the salts of the organic acids, thereby liberating the bound alkali metal ions. If the scrubbing liquid contains an oxidizable activator, the latter can be extracted prior to oxidation of the scrubbing liquid and added back subsequent to the oxidation.

Methods and apparatus for scrubbing gaseous mixtures containing ammonia are disclosed in which the gaseous mixtures are contacted with methanol in a scrubbing column to remove any acidic gases therefrom, the methanol is separated from the acidic gases and recirculated, and at least a portion of the methanol is contacted with an ion exchange material so as to remove at least a portion of the ammonia therefrom. In one embodiment of the invention, the method and apparatus also includes addition of methanol to the gaseous mixture prior to contacting in the scrubbing column so as to produce a methanol-water mixture with any water contained in the gaseous mixture and prevent the icing thereof, and includes separating the methanol-water mixture from the gaseous mixture prior to contacting with the scrubbing column as well as separating the methanol from the water and recirculating the methanol.

In a low temperature gas scrubbing process with a physical scrubbing solution, e.g., methanol, wherein either the H.sub.2 S containing gas-to-be-scrubbed, e.g., coal gasification gas, has a sufficient concentration of SO SO.sub.2 and/or O.sub.2 or wherein the H.sub.2 S containing scrubbing solution is brought into contact with a second O.sub.2 and/or SO.sub.2 containing gas, e.g. a stripping gas, to form elemental sulfur in the scrubbing solution, and said scrubbing solution is regenerated and then cooled to the scrubbing temperature, the improvement which comprises adding a sufficient amount of cyanides to the scrubbing solution to convert the elemental sulfur to thiocyanate, whereby sulfur is not precipitated in the scrubbing solution which would have otherwise occured, and removing the thiocyanate at least partially from the scrubbing solution. The cyanides may be added to the gas-to-be-scrubbed or the scrubbing solution, or there may be sufficient hydrocyanic acid in the gas-to-be-scrubbed at the outset.
