A process for cleaning filtering separators used in dry chemisorption systems. A maximum of 1-2% of the total filter area is in the cleaning process at any given time, to provide for utmost efficiency of the chemisorption activity. In the cleaning stage, the separators are cleaned by shock devices or similar means and are coated with fresh chemisorption mass before being returned to the chemisorption system.

Process for filtering separators in dry chemisorption

By separating a noxious-component-containing flue gas into two separate streams, subjecting one of these streams to dry purification and the other to wet purification, and recombining the resulting purified streams, purified flue gas is obtained at a temperature greater than the dew point of remaining corrosive constituents. This makes it possible to disseminate the recombined product through pipes and chimneys without a deleterious effect thereon. The beneficial results are obtained without having to heat the recombined gas stream even though the wet-purification process yields purified gas at a temperature far below that which is desired. Both the dry- and the wet-purification processes are significantly enhanced by incorporating piperazine in treating materials. Sorption agents used in the dry purification are reused in the wet purification, enhancing the efficiency of the disclosed system.

Noxious-component removal from flue gas and compositions useful therefor

A method of and an apparatus for the scrubbing of waste gases and especially combustion gases by chemisorption. According to the invention combustion gases which can contain sulfur dioxide are scrubbed with water in the presence of lime and the scrubbing liquid is collected directly beneath the scrubbing column in an oxidation basin which is provided with means for introducing oxygen into the liquid to promote the formation of calcium sulfate crystals. The gases can sweep across the top of this basin and, at the outlet thereof, a coarse droplet separator is provided followed by a fine droplet separator or demister. Spray-water nozzles can be provided between the droplet separators for cleaning them.

Method of and apparatus for the chemisorptive scrubbing of waste gases

Solar collectors have flat plate-like foil tubes with permeable interlayers with lattice structure surfaces bonded to the foils of the tube. Several tubes with insulating backing are seam bonded together to form a sheet for covering a roof. Heat transfer medium flows from inlets into a space along one side of the tube, through the permeable interlayer into a space along the other side of the tube and through an outlet. The structure is thin, light, inexpensive and easy to install. Flow of medium which covers substantially all of a surface may be precisely controlled. Temperature of medium in the collectors may be maintained only slightly higher than temperatures throughout the system.

Solar collector

A hospital bed has ducts with openings in a frame and a mattress and blanket connected by a hose to an exhauster and filter. A hood formed of several panels at a head of a bed reduces noise and provides ventilation.

A fireproof respiratory face mask for use in fires and smog has a granular expanded calcium aluminum silicate base material coated with layers of soda lime, active carbon dust, copper dust soaked into a caustic soda solution and manganese dioxide dust held between two layers of ceramic fiber fleece-like materials felted together to hold the coated granules. The face mask is stored in an easy opening ceramic fiber fireproof package with a pair of fireproof gloves.

Respiratory device for catastrophic fires and/or smog weather conditions

In an apparatus for cleaning hot gases a filter housing has an inlet for unfiltered gas and an outlet for filtered gas. A plurality of filtered inserts are placed within the housing in a manner capable of filtering undesirable components from the gas feed stream. Each filter insert is made of a fibrous filter material. Silicic-acid glass fibers have a silicic acid content of at least 90%. Coated upon the fibers and absorbed into their pores is a metal oxide of aluminum, titanium, zirconium, cromium, nickle or cobalt. A honeycombed cage filled with high temperature resistant perlite is located within the housing between the gas inlet and the fiber inserts. The cage has an inlet and outlet external to the housing for replacing the perlite. A combustion chamber mounted in the housing has a discharge nozzle located so that the nozzle is directed at the filter inserts. Combusting materials in the chamber causes an explosive backflow of gases through the filter inserts.

Filter for cleaning hot gases

A fireproof door has a fabric of ceramic or glass fibers attached to a metal frame and covered by facings. The fabric which also may be used as a fireproof mat consists of layers of titanium-treated ceramic or glass fibers felted together by similar needlelike fibers extending through an intermediate layer of fireproof particulate material.

Fireproof door for hotels, skyscrapers and the like

A granular or plate-like calcium aluminum silicate layer stores water beneath fertile soil. The silicate material may be coated with fertilizer or chemicals and may be shipped and installed within a wrapping, at least one surface of which is moisture pervious. A fleece-like material may form the pervious surface. A silicate container with a perforated cover and sidewalls fits within a planter. A filler pipe extends through the soil into the container. The silicate material may be mixed with the fertile soil.

The present invention relates to the use of amorphous, dust-like silicon dioxide emission products from electro-thermic manufacture of ferrosilicon and/or silicon as fillers in refractory compositions. The advantages obtained from the use of the products include improvement in mechanical abrasion resistance, heat stability, and electrical, thermal and sound insulation.

Compositions containing silicon dioxide

Gas contaminated with at least one noxious component, such as SO.sub.2, HF or NO.sub.x, is scrubbed with a clear, calcium-containing, initially-basic washing liquid which also comprises the anion of a strong inorganic acid, that of a polybasic carboxylic acid and, optionally, that of a monobasic carboxylic acid. Apparatus is provided for scrubbing the gas, oxidizing produced calcium bisulfite to calcium sulfate, separating out and removing solids, and recirculating clarified liquid for scrubbing contaminated gas.

Removal of noxious contaminants from gas

Organic refuse is pyrolyzed to form disposable solids and gas. The gas is washed at a temperature well above 100.degree. C. with wash oil, which is recirculated. Spent wash oil is pyrolyzed with contaminants and further organic refuse. The washed gas is filtered through sorption means to remove acid and or other noxious gases therefrom before being cooled well below 100.degree. C. to condense water vapor and other constituents having boiling points within the range of from, e.g., 75.degree. to 150.degree. C. After separating the resulting condensate, thus-purified combustion gas is used, e.g., as a fuel source for the organic-refuse pyrolysis.

Refuse pyrolysis

Pulverent solid sorption agent is injected into and, optionally, admixed with a stream of noxious-contaminant-containing gas and then separated from such gas. The solid sorption agent comprises an alkali-metal and/or alkaline-earth-metal compound and advantageously contains iron-III-oxide; such agent is preferably in the form of dust developed during production of iron or steel.

Gas purification

A process for the purification of gas, which is generated in pressure gasification of coal, which uses a wash oil, especially tar oil, as the washing liquid to avoid clogging of the washing apparatus by tars and tar compounds which precipitate out of the washing liquid when water or aqueous solutions are employed as the washing liquid. The wash oil is preferably used in the circulation, from which solids and tars are continuously removed, and is then fed into the pressure reactor again. The wash oil circulation is continually regenerated through distillation, and the residues are fed into the pressure reactor. Heat is constantly extracted from the gas before or during the washing in a heat exchange process, making it possible to keep the heat loss extremely low and to create optimum temperature at every point of the total cycle by appropriate extraction or addition of heat. The heat extracted may be used for generation of steam, which is fed into the pressure reactor, into the distillation process for the regeneration and purification of the wash oil, and/or into the discharging flow of purified gas. The gas is also desirably brought into contact with separating materials, such as alkali, earth alkali, dolomite, etc., for the purpose of separating hydrogen sulfide.
