A moisture-curing hot-melt polyurethane adhesive foam comprising isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymers based on polyester or polyether and having a melting point of 40.degree. to 60.degree. C. or a glass transition point above room temperature, melted together, optionally with a nucleating agent and/or a surfactant, treated with an inert gas under pressure and released in ambient pressure is allowed to cure as a foam whereby a cure rate is achieved of at least ten times that of the composition when not foamed; extremely rapid cure rates are achieved and thick bond lines are readily obtained.

Moisture-curing, hot-melt polyurethane adhesive compositions

A quick-setting, moisture-curing hot-melt polyurethane composition having a first polyether-based polyurethane prepolymer having a Tg above room temperature and a second polyurethane prepolymer with a Tg below room temperature, the first prepolymer being prepared from a low molecular weight polyether; preferably the second prepolymer is also polyether based and prepared from a high molecular weight polyether.

Moisture-curing, polyurethane hot-melt compositions

A moisture-curing hot-melt composition comprising at least one isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer has improved sag-resistance while retaining high extrudability and is characterised in that the composition includes 1-17 wt %, preferably 3-6 wt %, of hydrophobic, siloxane-coated, fumed silica. Especially effective polyurethane hot-melt adhesive compositions are prepared containing 4-5 wt % of the hydrophobic, siloxane-coated fumed silica.

Moisture-curing polyurethane-based hot-melt compositions

Quick-setting hot-melt adhesive compositions comprising a mixture of at least two polyurethane prepolymer, each providing a different glass transition point to said composition. Preferably one prepolymer has a tg above room temperature and one prepolymer has a tg below room temperature. These adhesive mixtures show an attractive blend of properties, giving quick setting bonds which are flexible immediately after bonding and which after curing have excellent heat stability and resistance to hydrolytic and chemical attack.

Hot-melt polyurethane adhesive compositions

The specification is concerned with sealant compositions comprising prepolymers which are capable of being cured by atmospheric moisture. The compositions provide a desirable blend of properties with regard to application and use, using prepolymers derived from comparatively inexpensive raw materials. The prepolymers correspond to a reaction product of an at least substantially linear acrylate ester polymer having a Tg of not greater than 10.degree. C. with a hydrolysable silane having a saturated organo-functional group, the reaction product being a fluid material soluble in organic solvents and curable by exposure to atmospheric moisture to a resilient solid. The prepolymer is a silane-modified polymer which preferably has from 2 to 3 hydrolysable silane groups per molecule of prepolymer and from 1 to 3 hydrolysable groups per silane group. Preferred acrylate ester polymers are homo- or co-polymers of butyl acrylate; copolymers may contain other acrylate monomers and or may contain up to 50 wt % vinyl monomer e.g. styrene. Preferred silanes are amino-silanes particularly those having 2 or 3 hydrolysable alkoxy groups. Also described and claimed are methods of making the prepolymers. The compositions are suited for construction and glazing sealants.

Moisture-curable sealant compositions

Pressure-sensitive adhesives which are mixed immediately prior to application, or need drying equipment tend to be expensive in use while those applied as hot melts tend to have poor heat resistance. According to the invention an adhesive composition curable by atmospheric moisture is provided, the composition comprising a prepolymer component with isocyanate functionality between 2.0 and 3.0 together with one or more polyetherurethane prepolymers having NCO groups available for reaction with water for chain extension, the cured adhesive composition having a glass transition temperature below 20.degree. C.

Adhesive compositions

Novel, solvent free adhesive compositions comprising a moisture curable polyurethane formed from a first component comprising a diisocyanate, and a second component comprising a substantially linear hydroxy polyester in proportions to provide a prepolymer having from 1.0 to 2.0 percent by weight --NCO groups available for reaction, and a third component comprising a monofunctional reactant present in an amount sufficient to react with 1-40 mole % of the reactive --NCO groups of the product of the prepolymer reaction. A layer of applied adhesive may be exposed to airborne moisture under relatively mild conditions to bring about chain extension of the moisture curable polyurethane, after which the layer of the adhesive composition may be heated to bring it to tacky adhesive condition. The chain extended adhesive composition is storable for at least several days without affecting the bond strength.

Novel, improved adhesive compositions curable at ambient temperature to form adhesive bonds between opaque, impervious, substrates without external application of heat, light or other radiation. The adhesive compositions of this invention comprise one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers, a source of free radicals, and an activator comprising an azine dye material or the reaction product of an azine dye material with a reducing agent.

Adhesive compositions and method

Adhesive compositions comprising polyfunctional (meth)acrylate monomers, a source of free radicals, adhesion promotors which are poly(meth)acrylates having carboxylic acid groups pendant on pyromellitic acid dianhydride residues of the molecular chain and a compatible elastomer.

Adhesive composition based on acrylate monomers and a peroxide, together with selected halogenated aliphatic acids, which is storage stable and can be used as an anaerobic adhesive composition and a method of bonding by use of that adhesive to quickly form adhesive bonds to steel, copper, zinc and brass without use of a primer, which bonds do not lead to significant corrosion of the metals.

Adhesive composition and method

An adhesive composition formed by combining two parts capable of causing polymerization to form adhesive bonds rapidly. One part comprises polymerizable vinyl monomer, selected chloro-sulphonated polyethylenes or mixtures of sulphonyl chlorides and chlorinated polyethylenes, compatible monomeric material having three or more ethylenically unsaturated double bonds. The other part comprises an activator.
