Optical fluorophosphate glasses based on Ba(PO.sub.3).sub.2, Al(PO.sub.3).sub.3, alkaline earth metal fluorides and AlF.sub.3 are described which have a refractive index n.sub.e between 1.47 and 1.50, an Abbe-value .nu..sub.e between 85 and 80 and a positive anomalous partial dispersion value .DELTA..nu..sub.e between +17 and +22. They comprise (in wt.-%) 0.5-3 Mg, 8-10 Ca, 12-20 Sr, 9-12 Ba, 7-9 Al, 5-9 P, 8-12 O and 35-38 F. Ti, Na, K and H may additionally be present. The improved physico-chemical parameters (expansion coefficient, glass transition temperature, density, Knoop-hardness) and the transmission characteristics are given, and a process for producing these optical glasses is described.

An auditory ossicle prosthesis is described comprising a plate (1) with a groove (7) applied to its upper side and a shaft (2) eccentrically applied to its lower side. The prosthesis consists of a bioactive material and contains additionally at least in one partial area an insoluble bioinert material, which is applied mainly as a coating material in the form of an additive layer (S(+)) or a subtractive layer (S(-)). Suitable coating processes and substances are disclosed. If S(-) layers are applied, they may be exposed subsequently to a sealing and/or silanizing treatment.

The composite material for prosthetic purposes of the present invention is essentially composed of a plastic matrix, preferably of a methacrylate plastic, and at least one bioactive filler material, preferably a glass ceramic material of apatite crystal structure. The finely comminuted bioactive material may be homogeneously or nonhomogeneously incorporated in the plastic matrix. Reinforcing additives such as glass fibers and the like may also be incorporated into the mixture of plastic matrix and bioactive material in order to improve the mechanical strength properties. The bioactive material may be admixed to a mixture of methacrylate monomer and curing agent or to a prepolymer obtained therefrom. The composite material is useful as bone cement bone or tooth replacement material, and in general for prosthetic purposes in surgery and orthopedics.
